Good evening,

I am getting a new 120 gallon tank and will be taking some media and foam pads from my rena’s and adding to the two xp3’s I will have on the new tank.
My question is how much will/can this speed up the cycle process?
If this question has been asked and answered already, I apologize, please direct me there.

Thanks,
jb

It will drastically speed it up. In theory, your tank is instantly cycled for the same fishload as the proportion of the filter media you moved. For example: if the reno had 10 fish and you moved 20% of the media, the new tank is cycled for 2 fish. This could be scaled upwards as necessary. Of course, doing this, you still want to test both tanks daily to ensure you have no problems with spikes.

Yes, as eaglesaquarium says, basically once you have one cycled filter, you can just clone from that one and never need do another cycle (hurrah!).

Make sure you feed sparingly and test often, in both tanks, for a week or so, as you can disturb the bacteria enough to occasionally start a 'mini'cycle', but that would usually only last a day or two at most.

I start all my tanks that way and have done for donkey's years now.
