Cycling Without A Tank

This just popped in my head.

I read you can cycle a filter in a bucket. Thought of doing that but my filter doesn't fit on top of the bucket so is it possible to grow the beneficial bacteria by leaving the media in the bucket? Or does that not make sense

You can do it in a bucket, but you need water to pass through the filter to get it the bacteria to grow.

What filter have you got?

I guess you could do it with just the media in the bucket but you would need to aerate the water and media vigorously.

Realised my filter is only a mechanical filter and got ceramic rings for biofiltration

sounds like a very standard filter to me. You've got the rings inside the filter, right?

Didn't know about the rings in the beginning so I'm adding them in soon.

Yes kind of a complicated story but I'll just be cycling with my tank

It can give you a head start but you may still need to finish the cycle in the tank, if the capacity is different.

No worries.
It really worked a treat, following on from the bucket I set the Rio 400 up Saturday and had double zeros in 24 hours yesterday with 2ppm hoping for another double zero today after dosing 3ppm

Yea, starting out with some mature media probably played a large part in that as well. More double zeros and 4ppm dosing last night so fingers crossed will be on 12 hour testing come the weekend!

LOL That's really awesome. I realized I gotta restart my cycle for my small tank because I had no bio-filter in it *bangs head on wall*
