Hi Susielyd, yes we're on tank water. We've had to buy it from town - 2 truckloads so far and it is terrible water, at least it is mostly clear and doesn't have that brownish tinge to it like some people get 
The kids don't like the taste and I have to run it through a filter just to make it half palatable Oh I wish it would rain!
Thanks for the tips on the tank, I didn't do a water change today as all the fishes are swimming around quite happily with fins up tonight so I'm guessing the water is okay for now. So maybe it is starting to cycle?
Not sure what the plants are - my plan was to get a few different types and see which ones liked the tank so I could get more of them to replace the ones that didn't like the tank and died.
If it doesn't rain soon I might have to pack up my Danios and send them down for you to look after until it rains again Susan
