Hey, I was told by an ex lfs emplyoee that theres a trick to cycling to make it run a bit smoother and quicker. The guy told me that when cycling a tank if you add the Bacteria supplement into the filter appose to into the tank full of water, you get better results because the bacteria begins to colonize upon the filter and it's media before it does with anything else.

Is this true? Would this really speed up a tank cycle (even a little bit?)

There are products but their names escape me, they will only owrk if the product is refrigerated from start to finish. ie if they are off the shelf in the lfs the bascteria will be dead. Mature media donation is a cheaper more reliable option in my opinion.

Bio-spira in the U.S
Bacinettes in the U.K

Although there seems to be a fair amount of doubt as to whether Bacinettes actually contain the wrong type of N.O.B; those of the genus Nitrobacter
When many studies seem to suggest those of the genus Nitrospira are the most essential bateria during a tank cycle.

:dunno:

Tell me about it; up till 6 this morning, 4 hours sleep and then in work at 4-10 this evening.

If the products truely contain live bacteria as Bio-Spira and Bactinettes seem to (Bactinettes does have the wrong nitrite processing bacteria though) then adding it to the filter may help. No really sure though. Of course if it's a product like Cycle or Stress Zyme it probably doesn't matter as the general concensus is that there are no bacteria present anyway.
