hi, im considering what cycle to do, fish in, or fishless. would the product (below) be ok for a fishless cycle? as it is liquid ammonia.

Yes if it is ammonia then im sure it will be ok. this isnt the place to ask wether to do fishless or fish-in, as you will only get one answer

Yeah Ive head people using that before, obviously give it a shake to make sure it doesnt foam before using it.

You can always go to your nearest homebase and get a bottle from there for £1.99 :good: Failure to find any ammonia, you could always use prawns or fish food to get the cycle going.

If you want to do a fish in cycle nick, then by all means do so, but you know enough to do it properly, so its your decision.

They sell some in Boots which is 9.5%. Then you can use the calculator in the cycling post to give you an idea of how much to add. And you can get it today :D

they only sell it in biger boots stores, my 2 loacal ones dont have it

i have that ammonia, if you read my post from yesterday you can see.

its pretty strong. in a 10l bucket with 0.5ml of that ammonia it went off the api chart, so today i am going to have to work it out in my tank which is 240l which should be easier. i am starting cycling with it today.

im doing it on a 240L as well. i think 1ml should be plenty. i might start off with 0.5 to get it going.
how often should i add a drop to the tank? (i have never done a fishless cycle, always fish in cycle and have only ever lost 2 fish doing and 'In' cycle!)

you can either add a set amount each day, or add say 5ppm, when its gets to 1ppm, a few days, add it up to 5ppm again

how do i know when its at 5ppm? do i have to use my test kit? surely i put in a drop then test and see what happens?

Nick, read thru the link in my sig, in red, its Rdd's fishless cycle guide, its easy to follow and will tell you exactly how to go about it. Dont you have some mature media from another tank you could use in the 240L to get it going?

yeah i have put some media in, of course!, but i doubt it will help much. i cant really spare too much from my other tank

Nick, Even a small but of mature media really helps a lot. Fishless cycling averages 3 to 6 weeks but a lot of the first 2 weeks or so is just bringing the tiny number of ammonia oxidizing bacteria present in tap water up to an beginning colony that's big enough to be detectable by our kits. Often mature media jumps past that.

Hiya Guys,

I am using that Ammonia in my fishless cycle, works fine. I needed 7mm of it to create 5ppm in a 90L Tank.

Cheers
