Hey all,

I have a plan which Iam about to undertake, in the interest of science!

It has struck me that as a cycled tank smells of earth, because the same bacteria which live in a cycled filter live in soil.
Would it not be beneficial to 'harvest' some bacteria from soil to speed up the cycling process?

I have a 2 spare 10 gallon tanks, so I intend to set both up, with identical unused filters in the usual manner.

Everything will be the same in both tanks, except one tanks water will have garden soil bacteria introduced into it, to achieve this I will put the water in buckets, add dechlor then half fill each bucket with soil, stir then allow it to settle. When settled I will pour th water into the tank.

Then I will add ammonia to the tanks, and allow to cycle in the usual way whilst checking both tanks regularly.

I just wondered has anyone done this before?
And would anyone here be interested in the results?
If so I will make a journal of the comparitive progress.

Doris
