Id have to say that i dont agree with the statements made prior about refrigatative sources only being useful. And i have to agree with the ability to send bacteric(particularly nitrifiers) into a 'dormant' state by a lack of oxygen. To look at this look at the breakdown:
4NH3 + 702 ---> 4N02 + 6H20
2N02 + 02 ---> 2N03
Oxygen is an essential component of this chemical reaction: and without it or even with a small amount, only a few reactions can take place before the bacteria go dormant. So hagen isnt lying, they just havent fully explained the simple chemistry.
Now as for results: Using Cycle I came out with an ammonia spike of 1ppm max, and a spike of nitrite 2 ppm max. I will be putting these results along with some explanations up shortly after my exams complete. Now normally in a cycle with fish 1ppm is quite minimalistic: something was preventing it from reaching outrageous levels, and took time to reproduce and bring the level to zero. For the nitrites, without cycle i have seen these 5 ppm with ease: so the question is what restricted these values. My bet is cycle, within australia it is illegal to sell a product that does not do what it is supposed to do, it is tested and if failed thrown away.
Having said this I personally do not believe that fish cycling is a viable method: and had I known about it would have done fishless cycling in preference to my years of cycling with fish. However: if you must cycle with fish use one of these products and minimise the fishes suffering.
