So right now I'm fishless cycling a new 55 gallon tank and am going be purchasing a custom stand tomorrow. (I was shopping around and all the stands I could find in Korea where like $300 when I can a custom design for $150-$250

So here's my idea

So I've always wanted to do a Beta community tank but with what I wanted to put in my 55 gallon it just wasn't going work. Now since I'm designing my own custom tank stand why not allocate a nice display area in the tank stand for a comfy 20 gallon?

Here is what I thought of:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Here's the overall stand design:

130 CM long
45 CM wide
62 CM high

Two compartments,

1st storage compartment is for storage and will be covered by a door I will have 3 shelves

Design:

50 CM long
3rd Shelf 22 CM
2nd Shelf 20 CM
1st Shelf 20 CM

the 2nd compartment will be divided into three compartments

Big compartment (for the 20 gallon tank)

80 CM Long
48 CM height

2nd and 3rd compartment (on bottom, secondary storage)

40 CM long, 14 CM high (each of them) their will be a support beam in between the two compartment (figures 20 gallon tank can still weigh 180 LBs)

Looks very interesting. I don't know anything about load bearing capacity - someone else will more than likely be able to advise there.
Hope you will keep a journal and post lots of pictures if you decide to go ahead with the project!

The structure will be made out of solid wood, much stronger then what I have now. It's 40/60 split...I would hope that would be enough support. But input from others would be good.

Don't think the 20 gallon is something to worry about, however I would be concerned about the 55 gallon on top.

I won't be building it, a professional shop will build it for me. I live in the city and don't have any tools. I've talked to this shop before and they do solid work.

We love pictures so as soon as you have some, please post them!
