Current Stocking Levels?

Hi all.

With really useful advice from this forum I set up a 200l fluval roma tank in May and did a fishless cycle. Since then things have been going great, the fish in there seem happy and I have had a couple baby platties!

I would like advice about my current stocking levels and whether you helpful people think I can get away with any more fish. I currently have:

3 angelfish
3 bristlenose Plecs
3 x platys that I put in when tank was cycled plus 2 x babies
6 x glowlight tetra
6 x lemon tetra
3 x mollies

The tank is well planted. I do a 10% water change once a week and when I do readings ammonia and nitrites are always zero and nitrates are usually between 20 and 40. It ha sa fluval U4 filter.

If I can fit some more fishes in there, what would be best to keep up my community tank?

I would say thats about all you can fit in there if you kept with the 1" per gallon guideline. At full grown sizes the tank will have be pretty well stocked.

That's what I thought.

I was getting itchy feet wanting to buy something else but didn't want to make the mistake and overstock.

I guess I should also consider that the Platies may carry on having babies. The first appeared about 2 months after the fish went in and the most recent appeared about a month ago.

I'd love to but can't really afford it and don't really have the room. I could find room if I had the money though.



Oh well, maybe one day.

I have my heart set on a marine set up, but I will need a lot of money for that.

Just to agree with what has been said. I wouldn't add anything else.

I'd give them all the time to get fully grown before you think about adding anymore fish.
Also you may want to think about upping your % water change.

I have done readings twice a week and since I started putting fish in back in June ammonia and Nitrites have always been at 0 and Nitrates between 20 and 40 which I understand is acceptable and the live plants will be using some of that.

I did a 50% water change about 6 weeks ago, but apart from that, from my knowledge the system seems pretty stable. What do other people think about upping the %?

ChrisCook > I was very surprised to see the baby platies, as like you, I thought the angles would have had them. When we first saw each, when they were tiny we tried to keep an eye on them as best we could but the Angels left them alone. There is some quite long java moss that they hid in when tiny though which I guess was helping to protect them from predators.

I personally do 50% - 70% water change a week as I have german blue rams in my tank that require very good water conditions.

Its not just the stats that curiousity was thinking about. Fresh water has lots of minerals in it that are good for the fish and promote faster growth which is another reason for water changes, not just to maintain water stats. You may have heard in the past people recommend plenty of water changes for fish with damaged fins etc as it helps promote growth.
