Ok to cut the story short, chain stores are going to have to start increasing the size of the cup that they sell Bettas in according to an animal protection act that was supposedly passed. I went to Petsmart the other day and the cups they use for bettas are huge, almost 1/2 a gallon. That’s a big improvement over the Dixie cups. Has anyone else seen the improvement yet?

O wow that would be much nicer for the bettas!! I haven't seen that around here in my area yet though. Do you know if that act only pertains to certain chainstores or areas at the moment? Sometimes they do that.

They're not doing it here either. In fact, the Petsmart here has been putting females in the cup (individually of course) instead of in tanks like the used to. I have such a hard time going in there and not bringing more home.

Dont have Betta cups over here, though glad to hear Betta cups are upgrading over there.

In alot of the shops around here ( the chain stores. ) bettas are put into tanks with totaly unsuitable tanks mates, where they get ripped to shreds

I haven't noticed any change here yet. Still same old tiny cups.

Off topic-dthoffsett, I see you're in Ks. Me, too! I'm in Topeka :)

Good!

I went to America last summer and visited a pet store with a whole load of small cups and didn't realise there was anything in them until I looked closer and found it quite shocking! Especially when I noticed one was almost dead. :(

Our lfs doesn't seem to sell them, but I'd prefer that to them being there amongst other bad tank mates!

Haven't noticed any change yet, but if it does happen that would be SO awesome.
Now if they would just get rid of the betta "tanks" aka death traps.... it'd be even better.

i havent seen a change yet. im looking forward to it, maybe i wont come home with so many now

No change here either. I saw that at a dollar store once though. It was like a container with rocks and a plant for each betta. It was a lot nicer than those cups. But that store stopped selling bettas.

what's actually really surprising is what i saw at a local walmart last week, when i got there i told my mom i was going to check out the fish. as i looked for the bettas i noticed that they had REDUCED the size of the cups. it was like they were cut in half!!! this gives new betta owners the impression that bettas don't need much room to swim...WRONG...

I wish they would hurry up and do it. I finally got my 5-gallon tank cycled and bought a beautiful Betta yesterday at our local Wal-Mart. Just for the fun of it, I tested the ammonia in his cup water and it was off the chart!

Oh gross! You should let the store know what the ammonia levels are. I never thought of testing their cup water.
I haven't been to my LFS in a couple of weeks, so I don't know if the change is in effect in my area, but I would LOVE if it were! I'll make sure to ask the clerk when I go in next time if they've heard of it.

When I went to my LFS which is Aquarium Adventures--a place that specializes in fish and loves them, and got my newest betta a few weeks ago, he was in a tall (maybe 8 inches +) plastic drinking cup--which was better than those tiny things with a little hole in the top I've seen at the chain stores. These bettas were pretty active--one kept flaring at me! (And yes! I wanted to take them all home--but not that day!!) :fish:  :fish: :fish: :fish:
