Hi, just a quick question. I got some plant weights from my lfs today as i want to put some cucumber in the tank as a treat for my platys. I want to know how long should i leave it in there for as they are like little pigs where food is concerned and i dont know if i should let them have a peck at for half then remove it or leave it in for longer! Any suggestions? Thanks GRJ :good:

Hi,

Remove it no longer than 24 hours. After that it starts to rot. Hoep your platys appreciate you!

Howya, I would only leave the cucumber in for half an hour or so, I've got platys too and they go into a feedding frenzy when they see cucumber or lettuce in the tank. They don't stop chomping at it from the moment it goes in and they look ready to explode after it. They absolutely love it and it's a great time to get photographs of them. I always pop it in boiling water for a few minutes before I put it in the tank, this softens it a little which seems to help them get a hold of it. Anway that's my two pence worth.

you might want to remove those seeds in the middle first before feeding as they can get rather messy.

you dont have to peel them. your fish will start from centre out. if they're hungry, you'd be just left with a ring. i leave cucumbers in for an hour or two. after no fish are picking on it, i remove them.

Also, zucchini or as you would know it courgette. Blanch for 2 or 3 minutes, anchor with stainless steel fork, drop in the tank and jump back. Don't leave over 24 hrs or until all the "meat" is gone.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice on giving my fish some cucmber. I have just put some in and they are loving it. I am enjoying watching them eat it. Thanks for all the tips! GRJ :good:

you can leave it in as long as you want. remember that many fish like decaying veg matter. it is unlikely that you will cause too many problems with your water, unless you are putting it in by the pound. lol. i usually pull it out when there is no "meat" left as has been said.
