I can answer your question:  No.  CO2 additions are not necessary with Crypts... that said, CO2 levels and light intensity are important to remain in balance.  So, if you have high light, it is important to make sure that your CO2 is sufficient.

Crypts are good plants for beginner plant keepers as they are fairly undemanding in terms of lighting, co2 and ferts.  They do appreciate a good substrate to pull nutrients from, and in place of a planted substrate, you can use root tabs to supplement.

can I plant in gravel and then use the root tabs---how often do you put in the root tabs?  do you put them under the roots or do you put them just near the roots or do you  just put them into the tank?

I have 4 of these in just sand, column ferts and co2. Doing surprisingly well.

column ferts----what brand do you use

I have always given crypts and sword plants substrate ferts. And they all did super, most swords I got were given away as they outgrew the tanks. I was finally forced to limit myself to the dwarf types. That said those tanks also got water column ferts. In most cases a combination of substrate and water based ferts works better than either alone.

If you want to use substrate ferts, you will need a long tweezer. I always approached placing fert. by going in at an angle from outside it towards the root mass and ending the fert up on the bottom glass. For smaller plants one piece ending up under the plant. For bigger root masses I would use several smaller pies and go in from 3 different spots and end the pieces closer to the edge of the root mass. In either case one is trying to avoid damaging the roots when fertilizing.

should I use a product such as Flourish for the water column fertilizer.

Flourish is trace ferts, not the macro.
