I bought the following 2 plants, according to the seller the same plant C. nevillii in a red and green variety. However, I looked it up and my plants are considerably larger, especially the red variety. The red plant is about 20 cms tall and the green one around 12 cm. The leaves are around 3 cms wide and 10 cm tall.

Here are pictures:

Anybody knows what this can be?

To me the top one looks like a crypt but I'm not so sure on the bottom one but I'm pretty sure it is also a crypt. Depending on where it was raised and the amount of light it was given it can grow shorter and bushier or tall and a little slimmer. I'm not too familiar with the growth of this specific crypt though. It seems it had it's name changed though to c. Willisii so have a look for that as well and see if they match up. I would but at work I only have access to wikipedia and google doesn't like to work on my iPod :p.

Cryptocoryne beckettii ''petchii'' :good:

Are you sure? These plants are so tall compared to the petchii I bought in Switzerland... That one was only about 5 cms high, and for these ones already the leaves are taller than that.

The are definitely Crypts.

Thanks for the replies.

I will have a look at willissi then, although I think this one is smaller too. It really is the biggest crypt I have seen in my life!

I have some Petchii in my tank and they are at least 20cm's high.

Thanks Grayscale! You gave me a good hint. I found an entry in another forum where they talked about C. undulata (an old name for willissi) that exists in 2 varieties: 2 duplicate and triplicate chromosome. ANd it turns out that the triplicate chromosome is also called giant willissi. I guess that must be it then. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a picture of this so called giant crypt.

Biulu: by the way, my Crypts also often grow much taller than the sizes stated online (for example, by Tropica). :)

Yes, that is true, but this is really extraordinary big. It is a pity that I didn't put an object next to the pictures so you could see it in perspective. I have planted these crypts in the back of my 180 litre tank and hope they will start growing soon.

:good: Good luck. I've heard or read somewhere that crypts have a different growth patternnot only with different lighting and ferts but if you plant them as a single plant or bunched together. I'll have a look around tonight to see if I can find something similar for ya to hopefully get a definitive ID if you'd like. The second pic is kinda hard to see the leaves and there shape and what not if you don't mind posting another pic of it in the tank.
