hi guys, will these two types of shrimp cross breed?
i have heard conflicting statements and explanations.
I want to keep CRS in my 120L but i would also like to have some cherries to make the tank more 'lively' and hopefully coerce the CRS into breeding as they feel more comfortable with lots of other shrimp.
But seeings as i will be getting high grade CRS, i cant afford to take the risk.

no they wont cross breed, check the chart http://www.planetinverts.com/Shrimp-Chart3.jpg

edit: doubt the cherries will make them more comfortable, CRS *i think* would prefer an uncrowded tank.

but that chart shows compatibility, i want to know about breeding.
i know the shrimp can live together but will they cross breed?

thinking about it now, the cherries are more aggressive than the CRS and will out compete them for food, so i think a species only tank is on the cards. But i s'pose there is nothing stopping me from getting some more amano's

thats the only thing that judges combatibility, the ability to breed, thats what the chart is based on :good:

Just a note but it says blue tigers aren't compatible...blue tigers are peaceful, but are the same species and so will definitely crossbreed.

So I reckon it is a compatibility chart that takes into account cross breeding.

right cheers for that, im still concerned about the cherries out competeting for food etc. have heard from many people in hobby about this.

I find my cherries outcompete the CRS for food.

also whilst both being peaceful shrimp the cherries are slightly more aggressive and will hassle the CRS's.

They dont hassle them as such they are just quicker at getting to food and tend to swarm over it and the CRS tend to stay back. Bumblebee shrimp IMO are worse than cherries and will chase other shrimp away from the food. I watched one today sitting on a pellet and holding about half a dozen cherries and tigers back from it.
