I was wondering if a crowntail male could mate with a normal veil tail female? do they have to be the same or does it matter?

how would one encourage a male to make a bubble nest? I have another male in sight, but he just seems to not be into it.
thanks!

I read on another site that a VT CT pairing will produce VTs - only when breeding F1, F2, F3 generations will the CT trait start to become apparent.

The F1 (first) generation would produce vts and combtails (vts with a bit of combing) you wouldn't get anything worth much until the f3 generation and thats only if you picked the females from the spawn with the most combing and bred them back to the father.

ahhh i see! thanks alot for the info folks

Uh..... since you didn't know what they were talking about. Do you think it would be a good idea to try to breed?
I know how it would seem like a great idea. Have your bettas breed and then never have to go out and get another betta again! WOO!

But it's not that easy from what I understand. You need ALOT of room and need to know what you're doing when preparing the female and male to breed with eachother.. and even then, things might not turn out so great.. IE fish becoming too aggressive and trying to kill eachother.
IF you are successful with them mating.. this is where the LOT of space comes in, b/c as soon as you can tell the males and females apart, you're going to have to seperate every single one of the males.

ONLY try breeding if you have the dedication, the money, the time, and the knowledge to do it :good:

wow--
it was really just a thought because i bought a VT female that was ready to breed . I know how much time and space and effort it takes, even though i am new to this forum i am not new to betas. I thought that F1 etc meant generation and was just checking.

i dont know if i really like this forum, i have been reading posts and everyone seems quick to judge and correct. Now i know you are all just looking out for the fish and people who own them's interests but it just seems like there have been alot of condescendence...

sorry to give you the wrong idea. that i was totally ignorant. I am not going to breed my betas just for the hell of it, i just started thinking about it and branched out from my usual forum to find more information. right now i am the proud owner of 3 planted tanks two mini female tanks and one lonely beta in his fav bowl.

and what does not knowing what F1etc means have to do with breeding safety preparation and space?
maybe you didnt mean to come off how i have taken it, but it just seems mis understanding people is a common thing on this site, soften your words to suggestions not accusations.

 It's very expensive and time consuming...

You'll need:

10 gallon spawning tank -$10
Heater - $14 and up
Sponge Filter - $10
Plants or hidey hole for the female to hide in - $5-$10
29 gallon or more growout tank - $89 and up for the complete set up
Frozen blood worms or brine shrimp to condition the parents - $5 a month
Brine shrimp eggs - $30 for a medium container
Microworm culture - $10

So you're looking at roughly $179 initally

Then there's the cost of jars for the males, the cost of shipping supplies when you sell them if you plan on shipping them out. And the labor of doing daily water changes on the growout and then on all of the juvi containers once the males are jarred.

I don't think anyone was trying to talk down to you, we were just simply stating all of the things involved, INCASE you weren't aware of everything. No one was trying to be rude but based on your previous posts it did come across as though you didn't know enough to breed. So please don't jump down our throats when we're just trying to help.

based on my first post on the forum ... it came off that i didnt know enough to breed... well for that I apologize. i know you dont know me and i am sure that it wasnt meant to come off as rude. but in my opinion it seemed a little condescending since i never said that i was going to breed them. i just wanted to refresh some information for myself, because buying that female just brought it out in my head.

Sorry Amunet (who the whole statement was directed to) i didnt mean to come at you like that, i just felt... as a newbie to this forum... that i might say something about lots of people posting sounding a little harsh instead of nourturing and helpful, i have been reading many of the posts and was beginning to think yikes.. i guess i would rather things put in a nicer way than jumping to conclusions etc. I never said i was going to breed them... i was just musing and looking for information

Sorry

Oh I apologize. I didn't mean to come off as rude or anything.
Looking back over my own post I can see how someone would take it that way! :look:
I did think you were going to try to breed them, so just wanted to inform that it might not be as easy as one thinks.
So I apologize again for seeming to sound rude or condescending when I truly wasn't trying to be!

me too! I feel bad now that its a day later.

its all water in the bowl!

thanks! cheers
