bumpity bump for the day crew...someone must at least have an opinion....i think that the croakers don't resemble paradise fish enough to cause agression from the paradise...however, i am worried that the small size and top-dwelling nature could invade into the paradise fish security and possibly cause agression

has anyone kept paradise fish w/ croacking gouramis or female bettas?

What size tank?

I'm assuming the paradise is macropodus opercularis.

Female bettas with the paradise are a definite no-no. That'll end in disaster - probably for the bettas.

As for keeping one with croakers, this depends somewhat on the circumstances. In the case of paradise fish, it isn't always looking similar that causes problems. Paradise fish can just generaly be aggressive. Females are less so though. In a big, planted tank, croakers and a couple of female paradise fish (two females so they occupy each other instead of going after the croakers - if you can manage 3 females, that's even better so one doesn't get stressed by the other - avoid males as they would just add to the number of issues you'll need to deal with) should be able to co-exist relatively peacefuly. Unlike many other gouramies, these two species don't actualy tend to stick to the upper layers and they don't usualy restrict themselves to setting up a territory at the top either so this isn't a major issue. However, croakers are generaly considered peaceful, even timid/shy fish while paradise fish are better suited to a boisterous to semi-aggressive community. Mixing the two would be risky. It isn't impossible, but you need to provide the right mix of tankmates and in the right environment.

well the current tank stock is listed in my profile
4 boesmani rainbows
2 paradise fish
3 rams
1 synondontis
1 bristlenose
1 yoyo loach
1 dojo loach
2 sa bumblebee cats
guppies

it is a 46 gallon bowfront, with a few plants, some floating..i already have the paradise fish (1M 1F)...they are not agressive with the rest of the fish at all, only pay attention to each other once in awhile ...the male has a territory in the top corner of the tank he is usually around...the female stays near the bottom most of the time...

i figured female bettas would def. not work, but i may try getting a couple croaking gouramis in a couple weeks...my lfs is very good about taking fish back if i do have issues, so hopefully it will work out

maybe someone else could offer their opinion too (thanks for the response BTW)?

Female Bettas wouldn't work in that tank, anyway, regardless of the paradise fish. They may take issue with the Guppies...many Bettas, regardless of sex, do.

I have found Croaking Gouramis to be a very mild, peaceful, and pleasant little fish. Mine are housed with my female Bettas, and neither species has taken issue with each other.

I do not, however, know a thing about paradise fish.
