i have 9 tetras and a rainbow shark in a 80 litre juwel set up have had it 2 months all going well until this evening a tetra is swimming up and down vary fast in tank not going up for air just zooming up and down. i have checked the water levels they all seem fine on monday i did a 1/3 water change checked pumped and replaced all the sponges in filter. added 2 caps of cycle for new filters. is he stressed? or maybe some thing ive done? all the other fish are o.k just chilling. is this normal?

Hopefully a member will come along who has seen tetra behaviour like that.

Meanwhile, you need to let us know some things in more detail. Exactly what type of test kit are you using (brand, type etc.) What tests are you performing on the water and what are the numerical results? How soon did you put fish in after the tank was set up? What is the brand and model of filter and what types of media do you have in it? Exactly what species of tetras do you have?

Unfortunately when you replaced your filter sponges, you may have lost the beneficial bacteria that may have been forming during the first two months. This will make it all the more important for us to get some of the above information and begin to help you move in the right direction.

When you do water changes are you using a dechlorination/dechloramination product on the tap water that is returned? Sorry for all the questions, but we will need them sooner or later and if you can get started on them the members will be able to start helping you sooner.

Continuing on from Waterdrop’s statement about you replacing the filter materials. You should only replace the filter sponges when they start to fall apart, (usually after many years). Carbon (black granules) should be replaced once a month. If you do have to replace any filter materials you should only replace one part/ piece at a time. Then leave the filter to recover for a month before replacing any other bits. This allows the filter bacteria time to colonise the new materials and will prevent you having to go through the cycling process all over again.
You might find over the next few days the tank gets an ammonia or nitrite reading. This is because you replaced the filter materials. If this happens do partial water changes every day or two to keep the levels low. Also reduce the feeding to once every few days. The less food going in the tank, the lower the ammonia & nitrite levels will be.

What sort of tetra is swimming erratically and how many of that species are in the tank? The problem could be caused by stress and not having anyone of its own kind to hang out with. If you don’t have a backing picture on the tank it could be causing the fish to stress as well.
Does the fish swim up and down all day or does it do it occasionally and then swim around normally?
What other fishes are in the tank besides the rainbow shark?
