had my tank set up jst over a week now cycling away fine

noticed a few coral growths on the live rock and noticed this morning just as i put the light on a little red tentacle/centipede looking thing, red with wwhite lines, it was bout 1/2 inch long and only a couple of mm in diameter and ideas?

also seen this crazy beetle/ bug looking thing couldnt get a good look as it moving sooo fast lol! grey in colour darting all over the rocks what could this be is that a bad thing,

also checked all the levels for the first time all checking out fine

thnks!

probably just an amphipod. they are completely harmless. they are common hitchhikers in live rocks and are actually beneficial to your tank as fish love to eat them. you usually only see them at night as they only come out that time, so if you wanted to take a second look, when it's lights out at night wait another half hour or so and bring a flash light to the tank, you'll probably see some scurrying around the sand and on the rocks.

take a look and see if this is what you saw

great response mate thanks!
i wasnt really worried i assumed that when i add my CUC next week that they would munch it lol

it was interesting watching it.....im new to this salty stuff so cheers for the info!

no problem! and :hi: to the salty side! as seffie would encourage all of us to say  .

i missed out on the first question you had about the centipede looking creature. this was probably a bristleworm. there are mixed thoughts on bristleworms mainly because some can grow huge and eventually devour your livestock, while some stay small (about an inch) and is harmless to your fish. in fact they become a part of your CUC as they'll eat leftover food sitting in the tank that you may be unaware of.

if you do plan on taking them out of your tank, don't handle them with your bare hands. the bristles they have can sting you, and depending on the individual, you could have an allergic reaction or what not. i usually suck them out with a turkey baster whenever i see them. overall they're a good part of your CUC, but whenever i see them i quickly take them out as i find them appalling to look at  .
