Great picture!! how many platys do you have? and what sex are/is they/it?

The plants look great! Whats the first plant on the left (tall)

I have been reading your thread from the beginning and I think that your tank is awsome! :D

Craynerd, I think you are fine. That is definitely an aquatic plant. Altenanthera species of some type, I will venture to say Alternanthera reineckii var roseafolia, which is what I have in my 15g. Mine looks a bit different from yours in my photos because I believe that the cuttings I received were allowed to grow out of the water line. Now I am getting growth that is much more similar to yours.

Do you like the picture?!? i still haven`t taken one that i`m happy with. Thats the best obviously, but i would prefer the background BLACK, yet it always comes out grey!

I have two plattys, both males i think, :good: no babies!! :D I like my plattys but they do really big poops which kinda pee`s me off !! They are nice tho because they are very vivid against the planted background and explore the whole tank a lot more than the tetras!

Cheers bud, and nice to see you in the forum! You have a planted tank yourself?

Wow 18 plants . Do you plant each stemp individually?

Yes :D and prune each one individually, and replant each one individually...lol, its pain but thats what its all about right?

Which plant are you talking about on the center left?

My fault i will edit it, the center right...the big red one! Its got a hard stem so if noone posts any more info on it and gives me the thumbs up :good: then its coming out of the tank!! i dont think its fully aquatic BUT it certainly is growing well!

Also, where do you get all your plants? LFS/Internet?

I have got a lot from greenline on the internet. I have got a lot of my initial stem plants from my LFS and then a lot of the specialist plans i have got from either TFF members or ordered them in at my local tropica stockist!

WELL, i only posted the list a few mins ago and didnt expect any reponses yet so i was taking more photos and was just gonna add them...anyways, here they are:

Tankupdate: Bit of pruning and hopefully a better photo?

MY otto and cherry red shrimps seem to have become best of buddies, either that or they are staring each other out!

and finally, an update on my cherry reds, i`m sure you can see from above the cherrys are certainly getting more colourful! This next photo really shows it:

HELP: ADVICE NEEDED : ALGEA!!

I`m sure you can see from the picture above that the bogwood is getting covered in this algea. There are only a few areas of plants effected, infact just a patch on amazon sword and also ONE leaf of pennywort with the same algea on. What is it exactly...its dark green velvet like with bright green patches in it!

I have also noticed on my vallis a few small green hairs! very very thin....i presume this is another algea?

Any advice or information about what it is exactly?

Chris

OK...thanks for the info. It seems to be growing well. Although gets a bit leggy at the bottom. All i do is take of the bottom two leaves, cut the stem just below some shoots and replant it....it carrys on growing fine but an inch lower :D

Yea it comes off easy luke, but the fact is that i want a balanced tank and shouldnt have to scrub off algea! Hummm

Anyways, bed now d00d...speak tomorrow no doubt!

Chris

Great pics!! I love cherry shrimp I think they are the coolest thing. I want a couple.

Nice to be on this forum. I am starting a planted matter of fact and was thinking about starting a journal. :dunno:

For your algae problem why dont you get a couple of amano shrimps or more otos??

The algae on the wood just looks like normal green spot algae. The darker colour one grows in pretty much any tank, and it is easy to rid, the lighter colour variation grows in high light situations, and behaves the same way, but is generally harder to remove.

Looking good Chris, where is the HC? You certainly have a mass of plant on the right, is there anything in the back corner there? I'm having trouble seeing past the dence growth at the front! :)

Sam

HC is right at the front. Its in the area that the light is reflecting heavyily off, beasically infront of my glosso.
I`ll post pics in a few days!

In the right hand corner is the internal jewel filter box. The mass of growth you talk about just basically covers the filter box. Like i say on the pictures it just looks like mad growth, but when you`re here its obvious that that is the case.

So Incitic, how do you go about getting rid of it then?

DT524, get a journal started, i find them really interesting to read, and its nice to keep everyone updated, especially since they have so much input into your tank, nice to show them updates. As you suggested, i`m also looking to get some more cherry red shrimp and some crystal red shrimp for breeding in my other tank ££££

Cheers Guys...

Anyone any more thoughts about Altenanthera ?

Chris

Just healthy plant growth and a good clean and scrub every now and again.

I think you can also tailor your EI dosing to get rid of it.

Well, as i posted above i had an algea issue on my bog wood. Went to the LFS today and picked up 5 Amano shrimp and 4 red long nose shrimp!

NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL TEAM WORK:

They`ll work day and night
...............and i don`t even have to pay them!!! Now that really is cheap labour!

You can actually already see the bits of wood showing through which they have cleaned AND whats best, they have only been in an hour!!!

I think Amano Shrimp may become my new best friend!

lol, the cardinals thought they were large pieces of food at first and i was a bit worried. Then the shrimp started to fight back! I think they have called it quits and everything is pieceful now!

Chris

Tank looks great, craynerd. Good work. Your Glosso seems to be doing what mine did in my 3 attempts at a carpet. I've decided that it's not possible to grow it in sand and have given up on it. Don't let that stop you though.....you seem to be a natural!

Andy

Thanks andy. My glosso is growing really well in the sand but then again, as jimboo has mentioned earlier in the journal, i planted it wrong and it gre up rather than across. HOwever, i noticed a few days back that a lot of rhizomes were forming horizontally the way in which jimbo described. So i uprooted some, cut it and replanted a patch! Its seems to have taken but i suppose only time will tell. Jimboo is hopefully sending me some shortly, this should grow well..i hope!

Thanks again
Chris
