i fed my crayfish on sataday night and went to bed, only to come down the next morning to descover he was no longer in my tank! feeling rather baffled, i looked everywhere in the tank, and also looked all over the dining room where the tank was, but no sign of him anywhere! it appeared that he had got through a hole in the back of the tank where cables can go through, unfortuntly, the corks used to block this hole up had come out on a recent tank maintanance, and i hadnt realised! anyway, ive just found him 5 mins ago in the unused fireplace. he was rite inside it behind the fire guard well hidden from me! unfortunatly, its to late as he is already dead :( he hasnt half traveled a fair bith though through 2 rooms and then hidden lol. he was also sat rite in the midst of what appears to be a mouse nest! funny creatures crayfish...

Those things are definitely silly creatures, that's for sure.

I love 'em and think everyone should try them at least once.

Awe poor crayfish, but at least he had the experience of his life i'm sure! :rip:

When I was 19, I had a car for the summer, and drove my nephews and niece to camp (I was a counselor there, so it was easy). Anyway, there's a small brook that feeds into a man-made lake, and overflows into the other side of the brook. The boys and girls have lots of fun catching crayfish in plastic cups.

One time, my nephews caught one and were bringing it home in a plastic cup... one of them decided to stick his finger in the cup, and got pinched. There was a yell, and all of a sudden, the crayfish is running loose in the car - it crawled between the seat cushions. I pulled over, and the car was searched. One of the boys even climbed into the trunk to llok for it. We never found it. We think it climbed out a hole in the trunk in its bid for freedom :hyper:

ong it would really upset me if i lost Violet! i am really sorry.

got some bits of advice for times like this. some is established Crayfish rescue stuff, some are ideas i have.

after looking for your Cray, try putting a dish or tub of tank water in each room the Cray may have got too, water is the thing they will always find. don't fill it too high about 2 or three inches is ample. just check the dishes on a regular basis.

if you find your Cray and it is dehydrated, put it in a dish of water, so the water come up half way on your Cray. if possible pop a lid on and leave it, though covering it may be worth it. you will tell if your Cray is coming round, as its activity will increase. when you do finally put it back in the tank, try to put it back in upside down, this will enable any air caught in its carapace to float out, reducing the stress to the poor creature. then just keep a eye on it for a few days.

a final point, i have heard of "dead" Cray coming back to life. they do have a defence mechanism, admittedly use in the water, this allows, the Cray to go into a coma, reducing biological activity to a minimum. it usually happens when the water temp get too high or too low, but there is no reason dehydration could not make it kick in. so if you find a "dead" Cray, it is often worth putting it in a dish as i mentioned above. you never know!

i take it this will not put you off Cray keeping summat fishy, that would be a shame.
