I've just picked up a couple of ceramic plant pots to create a couple of little caves for my new world tank. I'm quite keen on making them quite small, so was looking to break one in half and keep the other as it is and maybe semi bury it in the substrate.

My question is how is how do I crack one of the pots in half? The only way I could think to do it would be to saw a groove along the middle of the pot, and either cut all the way through or just give it a firm tap once theres a decent groove in it.

Any suggestions? If it goes wrong I'm not too fussed, only paid 40p per pot.

When I was cracking my pot I used a sharp chisel and hammered out the arch (3 locations). This method is quick and easy, not 100% all the time though.

Use a hack saw, yes a hack saw, the kind you cut metal with.

The ceramic will crack if you use a saw with too big of teeth.

I used a hack saw to cut my pots in half, and it worked just fine.

You just have to take your time and don't apply that much pressure.

It works very well. :good:

We cut ours with an angle grinder - that way you get no sharp edges

You can sand the edges down with sand paper to get any sharp edges down.

You click on my sig where ti says "my 29 gallon" to see the posts that I cut in half.

NOTE: these pictures are not up to date with the current look of the tank.

i used a flat screwdriver and a hammer, and rubbed them down on the garden path, i wet them b4 i started, dunno why tho, maybe run a stanley knife down the sides to try to get an accurate half ?

are they glazed ceramic or terracotta? or none of the above
