im thinking about my empty 10 gallon and i want a crap community!! i have red no more than 2 red clawed crabs per 10 gallons! so i thought YEY thats perfect! so what can you guys tell me about them?!

Not by any means are they all brackish, nor do they belong in the brackish forum. They belong right here, because they are INVERTEBRATES, meaning they have no vertebrae, as in...no spine.

i have one and they are freshwater crabs, my friend had two in a twenty gallon and one ripped the others claw off so its best to get one. mine is in a 260litre aquarium with other fish lol and he spends most of his time on the filtger and bogwood and he hasnt bothered the fish

Funniest typo EVER!

Thread moved to inverts.
That WAS hilarious.
I nearly spit my diet soda onto my screen when I read it, and then again when you quoted it. lol

I'm thinking about getting a land crab in a little tank too so i'll be monitoring this post for info too. :)

BM, Hermit Crabs are fairly easy if that's what you're looking to get. Just give them sand, plenty of new shells to pick from, and a water-soaked sponge. Oh, yes, and food. Quite the hardy and forgiving pet. Styx has two if you'd like to PM and ask about them. :)

if it's red clawed crabs you want, they are brackish and they need land. They have to have land so that when they shed they can sit out and their shells harden, (that is when they are at their most vunerable from fish and their own kind). The males fight non-stop so make sure you don't overcrowd them. they are also very cannibilistic so don't get upset if you find an empty shell lying around they are just doing what is natural. they can be quite secretive and nocturnal so if the tank is set up properly with plenty of hiding places you might not see a lot of them but when you do it's worth watching as they are interesting little creatures - saying that I have heard of them being out a lot, I suppose it depends on how safe they feel. They eat normal crabby things muscles, fish etc. they need the water to be 70 - 85F and i think they can live about 4 years. They are very good climbers and escape artists, if one escapes they can live a little while on the floor (one ended up in my sons bed room) if you put a dish of water in a hidden place, (under the sofa) you might be lucky and find the crab has found its way to it.

though they can be found in fresh water to brackish, slightly brackish water in captivity helps them live happier, healthier and longer lives; which if you are setting up a tank specifically for one then that is I'm sure what you aim for.

True.
Although red-claws can live in freshwater tanks, they live longer and get bigger in a mildly brackish enviroment.

I would like to say something here about hermit crabs. You need more than just what you mentioned. Hermits need humidity to breathe properly, you should have more than one at a time, they need a lot more than just sand, new shells and water! They are easy to keep if you know what you are doing with them.

Based on what I have thus far read, in my mind here is what I had pictured...

the tank is a 2.5G minibow - I'd have a sandy bottom, and on one edge of the tank I would have a bowl with water in it (would I also, then, need the sponges?)... sort of buried partially up to the rim in the sand so it would be easy for it to get in and out of - I've read they like to actually get into the water and bathe and play... some pieces of slate for him to crawl up and around on, and plenty of shells for him to pick up. I would also have some plants in there, as I've read they like to hide. Now I was kind of assuming the plants would be silk or plastic, because w/out water base live plants can't live. or is that a really stupid theory? lol

I've read they will eat just about anything, but that fruits were particularly their favorites. Obviously it would get regular crab food.

What else should I need, or need to know about them? Those little buggers fascinate me!

By the way - I am still on the fence about getting one. I will have to get WAY more comfortable with how to care for them before I get one.
