Hi

just after a bit of advice- is there anything that i can put in my tank with the fish i have as i was looking to add something a bit different (not fo r a little while though-as long as ok). I was looking at blue lobsters but told definalty no! Wondered about a crab? Frog? Shrimp? Or anything else that is not a fish? Or am I wanting to do the impossible by adding things like this??

Regards

with a careful choice of tank mates, and a fairly mature Cray, there is no problem keeping them together. though the personality of the Cray will have a barring on this, like us they are not all alike!!! Crabs also providing you give them some dry land, to use, are not bad mates, though it must be remembered that the should have Brackish water for best results. as for Shrimp, well i can speak, only for Fan shrimp on this, they too fair well in most community tanks. lol i have all three in my community atm and have, as yet, had no problems. lol i realise this my not please some members, but I can only relay the facts, as i have found them.

My worry with Cray fish is not what they do during the day when the lights are on, its what goes on when the lights are off and you fish are napping! This is when your fish are most at risk! They mostly will have a go at anything if its in arms length. And in my opinion its not worth risking just to see if the cray turns out to be a good guy
Fan shrimp are probably your best bet, they come in a variety of sizes so would suit most set ups. The small red claw crabs are ok and probably won't bother your fish, but as mentioned above they do need to be able to get out of the water, and will climb cables/airlines to do this, so its best to have an area above the water level that has easy acess for them. One thing i have heard about these is they do like to re arange plants :) So if your tank is planted I would be a bit wary. but if its only got plastic plants in you will be just fine.

i understand your worries, but would ask how many Crays you keep atm and for how long you have been doing it? lol a well fed Cray will not have any reason to attack fish!!! even those that are asleep. though the age and maturity, and as i say above, the personality will have a barring on your choice. thing is now a large amount of Cray farming is Poly(something) but it means that many different types of stock a kept and breed in the same holding areas. (fish ,shrimp, Cray). reducing cost and improving the quality of all its inmates.

but if you place a young Cray in a tank with fish, it will suffer, and may well not thrive. the same can be said for young fish, being but in with Cray. if the young Cray is harried by fish in the tank, it is very likley it will, set off on a bit of "ethnic cleansing" when placed into a community tank after maturing.
