I pretty much know what I'm gonna put in my 65gal, a mixture of Tetras, but I was wondering what other aquatic creatures might be compatible?

Definitely not frogs. But are there any freshwater crabs or such that would work well in my tank?

Sorry for such a n00b question!

Thanks guys.

Most crabs like the red clawed crab, require some salt, and others like the fiddler will most likely eat the tetras. I would look into to some kind of shrimp liek an amano or a cherry shrimp. They are pretty easy to take care of and don't require salt.

Yeah, I did a bit of reading after I posted my initial topic (should have done it the other way round really!) - if I get anything I guess it would be the Cherry Shrimps, just need to do some more reading up about them first.

I was in my LFS at the weekend and I saw a crab devour a fish - it was in a little display tank with bout half a dozen fish and as it was destroying this fish the other fish looked horrified!

If you can make a small brackish area in the tank then you could get a few red clawed crabs.

A bit like a Paludarium. With brackish pools above the water line. Somehow sealed so they don't drain into the fresh water part.

I believe red claws do need access to dry land as well. Beside most crabs are vandals with any plants and things they can break.

And if you put in X-ray tetras, you could get the salinity up to very slighly brackish (1.003), and put red-claw or fiddler crabs in without much issue.

Not too many other tetras are salt-tolerant to any extent though.

some form of tray with sand and a little pot of brackish seems to work reasonably well, but it must be said not ideal. i cant speak of Fiddlers, but Red Claw crabs do no harm to tank plants, or indeed fish. they will destroy a dead plants, their main food is decomposing veg matter, same is true of dead fish. but kill a fish, even a cory. no, not something i have seen, or ever read about. but lots of people who do not keep these guys, seem to think they do. but despite these comments, i would suggest if you are not keeping a brackish tank with a large area of dry/damp sand, please avoid any crabs as stock. they can last some time, but not as long as they do when kept in a proper environment. they do look good, and are fun to have. but fun as they are they really should not be kept in any form of community, with the exception of a Crab community
