Hi folks,

Have been using the Freshwater API test kit and up to yet have been very pleased with the results. However, a few comments have been made with regards to the accuracy of the NITRATE test and I was wondering which is the best Nitrate test to purchase :/

I have heard that the test strips are also not very reliable.

I am also running a UGF (bad idea now that I am a little more experienced) and want to replace this with either a Fluval or Ehiem external filter.
If I was to remove the internal pump to the UGF and install an external filter will I need to recycle the tank again :/

Hoping I can get some quick responses before I make the changes :good:

I have heard/read that a test kit known as the master test kit is better and liquid test kits are far better.... Also you could keep the UGF in the tank and put on a Eheim for example for 4-6 weeks so the bacteria build up is sufficient however if you can't run both at the same time I believe the tank will recycle

The best solution to the filter question is to run the two in parallel for a few weeks like already mentioned. An alternative would be to transfer the media into the new filter, but then you might have issues of media type, size, etc. These are usually not insurmountable however.

I use the API Master test kit and have no problems. The readings appear consistent over consecutive tests, and reflect the work i do on the tank and also the fish behaviour.

Irf.
