1. I'm sure I read somewhere that only male cichlids flare ie. the bit under their mouths and gills. Is this true or do females do it too?

2. Do female Bolivian rams have the yellowy glow to their bodies as well as males?

Ive seen a few females flare their gills now and again, my female nic flares at all sorts but she hasnt got the thick throat flap like you see on some males. All my geos do as well and I believe I only have 1 male in there...

My female Ellioti can really flare, I have also seen the sevs have a go too, both male and female, but they cant do it quite as well. I couldnt tell you with rams as the ones I have left are all male and dont remember if the females did or not.

cant give you an answer about the rams as ive never kept them , but i had a female blue acara which used to flare at the firemouth all the time .

The keyhole is Male in that picture IMO. And yes, female cichlid do flare, however, as said not as dramatic as the males. The female rams can have the same glow, although they are somewhat less colourful than the males, any chance of pics to sex them?

that keyhole looks male

not sure what u mean by yellow glow but the front half of their body is usually yellow when mature, it can even be more intense than males esp. during spawning/rearing fry
