well hes settled in well now and jus nearly took food from my fingers on the first try so everyones happy but im jus wondering a few things.

little bits of food seem to come out of his gills and one time when he grabbed 3 pellets at once loads came out.

guessing thats cos there was more in his mouth but is that normal?

and what else can i feed him?

at the moment he has cichlid pellets, cucumber which he picks at, bit of steak i tried but he jus picked at that again.

seems to like the pellets the best but i want him healthy so i need other options.

Oscars are greedy bar-stewards at the best of times mate and will without doubt oush food they can't swallow immediately straight out of their gills and if there's anything left worth eating then they'll eat that bit afterwards so worry not, it's perfectly normal, mine does it all the time.

Also i find mine is in love with bloodworm and it's easier to clean up and flow through the filter than pellet-poops so try that. They lvoe eating neons and other small live fish (anything small enough to fit in their mouths) but make sure you quarantine them first as you don't want the Oscar to pick up any diseases from them.

You could also try peas and cichlid balls though mine aren't overly keen on them.

Whether you have gravel or sand (relating to the gill question here) they'll generally pick that up and spit it out and let it pass through their gils of it's fine substrate to clean their mouths, throat and guts.

Hope this helps. Happy Fishing :D

hes a bit gorgeous....

get some frozen foods they are cheap and come in huge variety from veg to blood work or daphnia it`ll really vary his diet

congrats on the new tank you must be pleased but not half as pleased as your fish!!!!!!!!!!!!moving into the penthouse suite eh :hey:

Don't worry about the food coming out of the gills, he'll release less of it as he gets used to them, and they're pretty messy at their best.

Steak, or any food from mammals is really unhealthy for them. Check out the pinned topic on them.
