I was wondering. Could you take driftwood from a saltwater beach on the ocean, then boil and then soak it, and add it to a freshwater aquarium? Up here in Maine, we have tons of it. I was thinking of boiling large peices in a giant lobster pot...

yep pretty sure you can do that, i think people also add vineger to neutralise the salt????

ok maybe not then :D

yes you can use driftwood from the ocean...most driftwood that is bought at the lfs is from the ocean. boil it good and hard tho...and soak for a few weeks in a tub of fresh water, change the water every few days...

I'm pretty sure you can boil the salt right out of it Diano. It would take like a half hour though.

Personnaly I'd not risk the lives of my fish.
Every one is entitled to their oppinions and
it is up to the original poster to decide what to do,
given the information at hand.

It would be nice to know for sure has anyone done this without adverse effects?

yes
i have and thousands of others have... ;) anyone who buys driftwood at the lfs has....

Er, no......

The driftwood my LFS sells comes from freshater lakes and rivers
you've actually asked them who their supplier is?

do you realize the cost and effort involved in freshwater driftwood collection in comparison with saltwater driftwood collection? unless they collect it themselves or have a local supplier ,i highly doubt it is freshwater driftwood.

I have a friend that owns my lfs. ( Lucky me)
The mark up on fish stuff is usually 100-300%

Anyway the majority of driftwood they get are from beaches (saltwater)
I ask about freshwater driftwood and they sell it also but nearly 3 times for for the same size. Reason is its harder to get.

My LFS sells driftwood from various sources and yes, the freshwater stuff is more expensive, but my point was that your original statement was a little broad. To say that all driftwood bought from an LFS is from the seaside is inaccurate, the majority of it maybe but there is alternatives.

If this is a vote. I would vote no to this. Just becuse they sale it at the LFS don't make it good or right to fact. If this is a true freshwater tank I would not use it. But if a brackish tank I might. Wood that has floated in salt for a year has soaked up alot of salt and in a few min to few hour boil in the same salt water is not going to get it out.

But as always this is IMO

Exactly :D

That's why I buy wood from freshwater sources

Red picked up some driftwood and gave it to me. I've been soaking it for some time now and ... boy, does it stink, I don't think I'll be adding it to any of my tanks anytime soon.

But nice thought though Red. :D
