I have been treating for Ich in my Rio125 for 5 days now, seems to be coming under control now too. I did a water change last night, as manufacturers instruction say.

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
Ph 7.1

But I not notice that my harlequin has got a small white cotton woolly looking growth on his side, which I think it also inflamed.

I am still treating for Ich, both on the harlequins and 2 neons.

Can I also add a med for the growth ? Could it be fungal ?

Is it better to remove him and treat the Growth, or leave him in to get rid of the ich ?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Stu

How long until the present treatment is completed? What medication are you now using.

Do keep the water, substrate and filter very clean. It is most important to do this.

This may sound a bit silly but, make sure there is no carbon in your filter. Many people make this mistake

That is true about the carbon.

White spot as you know is a parasite. The parasite wounds the fish. Infection of either fungus or bacteria or both can set in as a secondary infection in the wound. So keep the water clean until treatment for the secondary infection can begin. I do not know the UK meds. I do not know if there are appropriate treatments that will mix with the meds you are now using. In addition we do not yet know if the infection is fungal or bacterial or both. Those thngs have yet to be determined, and best by someone familiar with UK meds and treatments.

If you see an increase in the white fungus like growth, we will need to move to treatment. The first thing is to determine if it is fungal or bacterial. There is cotton wool/columnaris (bacterial) and fungal. It also is not uncommon for a fungal infection to set in as a secondary with a bacterial infection as primary.

google them and look at some pics. If you can post a pic of the fish, do so.

Hiya

No carbon in the filter.
Im treating the Ich with King British Ws3. Been treating for just over a week now.
As I said the water is spot on, even checked again this morning and its still fine.

Its like cotton wool on the side. I am worried about putting more meds in white treating the ich really.

I will try and get some pics tonight.

Assuming it is fungal, with the redness possibly a secondary infection;
I'd consider trying a salt based treatment, while it is overused and relied upon not to mention often used in unsuitable circumstances, in your case; it is ideal.
Its obviously wise to go for a long term treatment so;
soft-water fish; 1g(NaCl) per 12.5litres of water
hard-water fish; 3g(NaCl) per 10litres of water
Plants will be damaged under the second dosage, its only estimative so you have to use your noggin and work out the treatment that best suits you.
BUT
If your really not sure if it is Fungal or Bacterial (columnaris) then i'd reccomend contacting King British; they certainly sell a product containing Phenoxyethanol, which has Bactericidal properties as well as Fungicidal allowing for mis-diagnosis, probably best used in a bath although i can't reccomend the quantities suitable.
I say contact them because hopefully they will be able to inform you if the two treatments can be used together.
(the white spot and phenoxyethanol treatment) <---EDIT FOR CLARITY

Good Luck.
:good:

Hey Germ. Thanks for that. I will send em an email now.
I will let you know what they say

The King British treatment that contains Phenoxyethanol is King British Fin
Rot & Fungus Control. I will email them and ask them if I can use that with Ws3. The only problem is they dont have a website

:X
I don't know enough about medications to even guess if they can be used together.
Maybe PM The Wolf who has a good knowledge of medications.....
Is there any fungus on the mouth area? Or just the body?

Other than the whitespot, which I guess he has 5/6 spots on him, its just the 1 sore on his right side, its small, well about 1mm, with white cotton type stuff in it, its not red. Its also slightly inflamed.

I will PM wolf then...thanks for help Germ.

Just a general information tid bit: Clean water is about more than water stats. All the water stat tests can be perfect and yet there can be a bio load that is too high and is likely to cause infection in a wound.

sent PM re your question

King British do have a website but King British is a trade name for Sinclair Animal & Household Care Ltd
and their website is http://www.sinclair-sahc.com/

Great - thanks for that Paul (again). Got your PM.

With my current load- it should be well within my filter to keep up with that.

The reason the white spot came around was due to me being away from work and my filter had managed to suck half a a plant into the chamber, causing the flow to decrease to about 1% of normal. This caused a temp drop which could easily have killed my fish, but didnt and then came the white spot :( Also I dont know how you measure anything other than what my tests kits measure.
