Hi i bought some mollies about 2 weeks ago, i have two red ones with black tails, ive been noticing one of them has been getting a rather large belly, i really want to know so the other fish dont end up eatting the babies! Also there is a smaller molly that follows close by to her.

I got to a music festival in a couple of days, do you think it would be alright to just pick up a trap from the local pet store till i get back? how long do they last pregnant? i really have no clue on fish pregancies!

Thanks, its the only place i could find to get advice!

yeh should be fine she's probably a week or so off having them anyways

they are usually pregnant between 4-6 weeks depending on tank temperature :)

Welcome to TFF

She is defo pregnant and is a red wag platy

If you pick up a breeder net/trap then maybe just pop her in there over night, turn the light off and feed her a little before

If no fry by morning then let her out and try again next night

Watch out for her hiding in corners, near heater or near the gravel

Also her stomach will go more this shape \_____/

Welcome to the forum Dreams. I have a link in my signature that will help you understand when they are ready to pop. If your fish gives birth while you are away, it would be best if you had lots of hiding places for the fry in your tank. If you have the mother in a breeding net and she gives birth, it will just be easier for her to catch and eat them. A proper breeding trap has a separate compartment where the fry can get away from the mother and still not be in with the other fish. Such a trap should never be home to an adult fish for more than about 48 hours so the next best thing is lots of hiding places for the fry.
