Could I Make Money From Breeding?

The only way for to make money from breeding fish is to do it on a huge scale, one or two smallish tanks will not get you anywhere if you want to make money, if you want to breed fish for sale then you need a set up like Tolak has for breeding his Angelfish where you can have a continuous stream of fry at various stages of their life and multiple pairs spawning.

Probably the easiest thing to make your money back on would be shrimp. Cherry shrimp are fairly cheap these days, but you can still make good money on snowball, tiger, crystal red, etc. I would say to start a breeding colony all you really need is a simply set up 10 gallon, and perhaps 10 Shrimp to start with. They should do the rest. Of course, you'll need to sell them on aquabid or elsewhere online, but shrimp apparently mail pretty easy. If you figure a shrimp tank costs $40 to set up, and you buy 10 snowball shrimp for $5 each, you just need to wait till you have 18 offspring until the initial costs recoup themselves. After that, the project should be self-sustaining at the very least, as only a few shrimp sales per month ought to take care of food, electricity, and water costs.

Barring that, probably killifish would be the most lucrative option - mainly because in many cases you can ship the eggs dry and save a lot on postage. In this case you must rely on online sales however.

If you wanted to breed solely for LFS, I'd suggest Angelfish, as they aren't too difficult to breed, are fairly prolific, and common "newbie" fish.

I've got my eye on a 30 US gallon tank. So, if I need that ratio, then how many fish could I fit in a 40" tank? 1 male and 3 female? I was only planning with one species, if I have more than one, it would get out of control. I have a spare 15 gallon tank not yet set up, so I guess that could work as a breeding tank? How territorial are they within their own species e.g how aggressive are yellow labs towards other yellow labs? And I read that to breed african cichlids all I need to do is get the water quality e.g pH, gH and temperature right, correct? Could you possibly tell me what that is or provide me a webpage for me to look at?

Thanks once again

Check out the species index on the site, theres some good info about breeding yellow labs there.

i dont think stores would hand out cash to you for fishes. they'd rather have store credit whereby you'd still have to patronise them. you might want to source out info from the locals and maybe supply them cheaper than what is sold outside
