When I went to feed Sigmund today, I noticed a small amount of white, stringy stuff reminiscent of thinly pulled cotton on one of his fins. I keep his tank pretty clean and at a warm temperature ( I'm pretty picky about it, since he's a rescue). He's behaving normally, and has lots of energy. Any thoughts/suggestions on this?

Sounds like fungus.

Can you post a pic?

I used aquarium salt and frequent water changes to treat this, cleared up quickly.

id also do a search for columnaris. it can manifest as white cottony/stringy as you described....id say either that or a fungus.
dont treat him until you KNOW what you are treating for. do some searches and compare what you find in your research to your fish before treatment.

could u post a pic? that might be very helpful!
