I have a 20 gallon tank I’ve been cycling for roughly 6 months with no fish in it. Yesterday I tested the water with my API Master Freshwater Test Kit and I got the all good. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0, and pH of about 7.4. Temperature is about 76 F and there are some live plants in there. I was interested in getting a school of tetras for the tank, since there isn’t anything in there yet, I was planning on having at least six tetras eventually in there, but I was wondering if only tetras can experience the cottonmouth (what it’s commonly called) disease or if other tropical freshwater fish can experience it too. If other fish can experience it, what type are they, tropical freshwater only please :). I wouldn’t be opposed to getting tetras for this reason however, just curious.

All freshwater fishes can catch the same diseases with the exception of the gourami Iridovirus that only affects labyrinth fishes (Bettas & gouramis).

Thats not strictly true. There are quite a few diseases that only affect certain species/groups of fish. For example only the more evolutionarily advanced groups can catch lymphocystis, and Hole-in-the-head is restricted to cichlids and very few others. There are diseases such as “guppy disease”, “Neon disease”, etc that are very selective. Also some diseases are caused by different species of pathogens in different species of fish, which means that even though different species can catch the disease, they can’t necessarily pass it on to each other.

All freshwater fish can catch “Mouth Fungus”, aka Cottonmouth.
