I have a red tailed shark in a small tropical tank and for the last few weeks i have noticed a white cotton wool looking growth on its tail which is approx 5mm in length.
can anyone please advise what i need to use to heal this and can it be used in the main tank to heal or should i quarantine?and for how long.

Many thanks

It sounds like fungus. You will need to pick up some meds for it, but im not sure which is best. What size tank is it, and how long have you had it? Red tailed sharks can grow veeery big! Fungus is usually brought upon by stress also.

Hi berrydog :)

Welcome to the forum! :hi:

I'm going to move your thread to our Emergency section. Hope your fish gets better soon.

Size fo tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

For columnaris in the uk myxazin by waterlife and pimafix.

Just a quickie response ...

What temperature do you run the tank at?

Since keeping loaches I have learned the benefits of the correct conditions for the species ...

I have found that things like fungus appear because the aquarium is consistently too cold, think of it like you and I in the Winter catching the flu I think tropical fish are no different if temperatures are constantly lower than needed.

I keep my tank at 27+ now, I am also meticulous over water changes and filtration.

Too often we reach straight for the meds without looking at the causes - i.e. go look for the guy with the matches not at the fire.
