Cost Of Running Tanks

due to an earlier thread it got me thinking of how to calculate the cost of my tanks, as my mum is always laming me for the high electricity bill

in tank 1 i have:
fluval 3+
fluval u3
1 t8 25w bulb on 8 hours a day

in tank 2 i have
1 fluval u3
2 x 20w t8 bulbs

could someone tell me how to work it out? or help me in some way?

You need to understand how much power (in kilowatt hours kWh) each piece of equipment draws.

a 25w bulb left on 1 hour = 25 Watt hours, or 0.025 kWh.

Therefore a bulb left on for 8 hours uses 0.2kWh (0.025 x 8).

A kWh of electricity costs roughly 12p

Therefore 12 x 0.2 = 2.4 pence per day for your lights.

I am not sure of the power ratings of the other bits of equipment, but I hope this helps.

Edit: for comparison boiling a kettle uses 0.75 kWh per day when used an average amount, therefore your lighting pales insignificant!

for both tanks it works out at about £21 a month which isnt so bad =]

We worked it out and having our server on 24/7 uses more leccy than my tank, although that might change once more tanks are up and running. We've just accepted we're always gonne have high leccy bills! Matches our gas so meh (no central heating only gas fires so huge gas bills!)

haha we dont have the heating on over night, due to humidity of having over 250l of water in such a small place with 2 people in the room at the same time, it just always stays at 25c, weve even monitored it over nights and its never changed lol

Where abouts do you live? do you not have seasons? what about windows, ever leave one open? that will cause a nice dip or rise in temp which your tanks wont like

Heaters are cheap as chips and hardly use up any leccy, plus they turn themselves off when they are at the right temp, why not get one and set it at 24, then if your right it wont even ever switch on, BUT if the temp does drop by 1degree it will switch on and correct it before your fish get stressed out.

Sounds to cheap to me? i personally guesstimate £2 or £3 a week? my heater is on half the time and lights on 8 to 10 hours a day. x2 T8 50watts.

Im in england lol i never like to have the window open as im on the bottom floor at the front of the house, the front door is right next to me window :\ so no i hardly ever have it open..

the fishies have been fine for the past year or so...the heater has caused more problems than solved em for me

there are many member on here that dont use heaters =]
