Hi there!

I was just looking at my 125L and realised that there's a few eggs stuck to the glass and the pots! After watching the cories for a bit they seem to be displaying breeding behaviour so I think I have some cory babies on the way!

I was just wondering if there's anything I can do to ensure the fry survive. Should I move the eggs into a separate container and raise the fry myself or should I leave them in the tank and let nature take it's course?

Thank you!

Congrats!  :)

Yes, take the eggs and put them in a breeder net with an air stone underneath if you can.  You might have to use tweezers or a credit card to scrape them off if they have hardened.  There are many different methods to hatch cory eggs, but just make sure they don't touch the air and they get good water flow over them.  If you leave them in the tank they will likely be eaten.

As far as the fry they shouldn't be on a bare tank floor.  They will get fungus and die.  Sand is best and they can eat crushed flakes, newly hatch brine shrimp, or Hikari First Bites.  (I use the latter.)  Good luck with the eggs!

Thanks for your reply!

I just read that the eggs will quickly turn white if they're not fertile so I'll see what colour they are tomorrow morning and if they're fertile then I'll move them into a breeding trap as you suggested.

Currently I have some spotted blue eye fry that I'm raising which are being fed on algae tablets dissolved in some warm water. If I were to get some fertile eggs and managed to get them to hatch could I also feed the cories this or can they eat slightly larger food than that? :)

That's very helpful, thank you!

The eggs are still white this morning, I don't think they're fertile. Maybe some eggs she's placed elsewhere will be but I don't think the 5 I can see are.

Will the try to spawn again any time soon or is it quite few and far between?

It could be that you didn't have enough males.  Usually you want 2-3 males per female.

My corys spawned every 2 weeks.  And when the 4 of them (only one female) did they had 200-300 eggs.

Ah, okay! I'm not really sure how much I have of each gender but I think I have more males than females. There's certainly more bigger ones!

Sounds good! Maybe they'll be more successful if they try again in a few weeks. :)

The females are actually the bigger ones. :) You can tell because they are very round and fat and have bigger heads.

Yep, you can always try again. :) By my 3rd or 4th spawn I got 87% hatching rates. (I got rid of my parents and kept some fry, so in a few months I'll be breeding them!) And I never had to use Meth blue.

Oh, yes, I meant I have fewer bigger ones, not more. I know the larger ones are female. Doh!!

They're actually in my community tank. I haven't been intentionally trying to breed them but it'd be lovely to have a few fry. :)
