AHoy!

Claire here :)

Just was looking at my tank and noticed one of my corys has fin rot.....Then I noticed a red almost bleeding patch on top of his barbels.....he is still using them and looking for food and swimming around fine. What should I do to help him?

Please see picture :D

I've had lots of luck with Melafix helping injuries and fin rot. A partial water change would also probably be a good idea.

What kind of substrate and decorations do you have in the tank? Could it be possible he hurt the barble on something? Any possible culprits that could have inflicted the injury?

Edit* P.S. Did you do that drawing? It's very good! :D And the pouty look is a nice touch. ;)

I have pebbles, not sand, so I think he may have got himself caught or scratched trying to move the large pebbles....my other corys seem fine however...

Yes I drew it in paint, he is pouting so I had to add that look! hehe

I agree with the Melafix. did you have this cory when you were having the PH Flux? If so it could have affected his immune system which has brought on other things. :(

Hi MissClaire :)

If your cory has finrot, it is a bacterial infection that will erode his barbels too. At this point, I suggest you purchase a good anti finrot/fungus medication, or antibiotic, and treat him promptly. I would no longer rely on MelaFix or other simple cures at the stage this infection has reached. Unfortunately, I do not know what brands are available to you where you live.

It would also help if you lower the tank temperature to no higher than 75 degrees F. and add an airstone to improve the oxygen content in the water. A good water change and gravel vacuuming will help too, if you do it before you start medicating him.

A cory uses his barbels to help him find food and a major infection can cause him to lose them completely.

Good luck. I hope your fish gets well soon.

Well, I agree with everything inchworm said except the temperature. You have Discus in that tank so you don't want to lower the temp.

If you have a 10 Gallon or can get one then you could move him to a seperate quarantine tank and follow inchworms directions to a T. :)

Hi MissClaire,

Oops! :*) I didn't realize that you had him in a tank with discus. (I'm glad ddreams caught that!) It would be best if you did move him to an isolation tank for treatment.

I just noticed this post that illustrates what I was trying to say could happen to him:

BTW, is your other cory and the discus OK or are they showing any symptoms of finrot or other problems?

other corys are fine! Thank goodness
however this morning Ive noticed white spot on my discus, if its not one thing its another.
They are just all so stressed out after all the problems, im trying my best! Things HAVE settled down now and the fish seem alot happier. but still not 100%
Thank you for your advice inchworm! I'll try and help this little guy, then its trying to treat the Ich!

Hi MissClaire :)

If you have a bacterial infection active in your tank, please take care to rule that out as the cause of the spot on your discus. It is entirely possible that the infection has spread to him too. If this is the case, it would be best to leave the cory there and treat the entire tank.

If you truly have ich, it will look like many tiny white spots all over the fish, just like if you sprinkled salt on it. If there is any patchy stuff that looks like fungus, or any sign of fin or tail deterioration on any of the other fish, it could well be the bacterial problem instead.

ok - so treat this bacterial infection now yeah?
and antibiotics will help treat this?
Looks like Claire is going to the LFS again tonight! haha
Perhaps it isnt ich....I can see the white spots on an angle but not looking directly at the fish. And there isnt enough to have the fish look like its been sprinkled in salt. So perhaps as you say it might be fungal?

HI MissClaire :)

It's so very important to make the proper diagnosis before you do anything else. Here's a link with a good picture of a fish infected with ich:

http://www.fishpalace.org/Disease.html#Ich

I think your cory definitely has a bacterial infection; they are prone to that. But it's a pretty sure bet that it doesn't have ich. This doesn't mean your others don't, but since you have an active infection going on, and it is a possibility that they have it too, and not ich.

If you need to, take the time to consider what is actually going on with them. You could do more harm than good if you put the wrong meds in the tank and have to spend even more time getting them out so you can retreat them for something else.

BTW, this is probably not an easy decision for you to make. Please don't feel that you must jump to some conclusion. Begin treating the cory, but a day or so might be worth the wait if you must, to make the right choice for the others.

That link is really helpfull thanks!
no no the cory doesnt have ich, the discus :p .....It looks like ich on the discus, but a very very mild case...no where near as many in those pictures.
As for the cory "I think your cory definitely has a bacterial infection" That I dont doubt at all and I will need to rectify asap.
Thanks SOOOoooo much for you help! You definatly know what you're talking about Inchworm~!

Hi MissClaire :)

I'm glad that helped and happy that you will get a good start on taking care of both problems. I hope they all get well quickly.

Please let me know how things work out for you. :D

With the budding of these new issues all at once I would think that a water test is in order. When your water is out of shape your fish are more prone to diseases and injuries.

Just a thought, good luck on your fish.
