Hey guys, just wondering if someone could put my mind to rest really.
I have a bronze cory with what I think is an injury, but I'm not 100 % sure.

coryz.jpg

I tried my best to catch her in order to have a closer look, and to feel it, but had no luck as there was literally too much in the way.

As best as I can describe it, there looks to be a white wound, with a small protrusion from between the "scales" (I know they're scaleless fish, but that's the best way I can describe it.) No red around it, she doesn't seem bothered about it. Her dorsal fin has had a few small nicks taken out of it, which is what makes me think that this is an injury from one of the other fish having a go.

Said protrusion does not move, and I've recently de-wormed the tank twice with Kusuri Wormer Plus, and it doesn't look anything like a body fluke. The "wound" is not fluffy or cottony, not red or inflamed. Also, just thought I should note that she lost her barbles a number of months ago and they haven't grown back (she swam into my gravel vac).

Tank stats are as follows:

230 ltr

Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 10ppm
pH 7
Temperature 25-26

Tank mates:

4 x angelfish
2 x Krobia Xingu
2 x Keyhole cichlids
1 x Female Pearl Gourami
1 x Golden Panchax
7 x Julii corydora
2 x Albion cory
1 x Bronze
1 x Adolfi
1 x BN pleco

I'm know that the tank is heavily stocked, I run two filters and do two 25% changes a week, sometimes more. Stocking will be split between another 200 ltr tank in the next month or two, at which point I plan to split the cory groups and up the number of albino and bronze.
I'm hoping what ever it is will just clear up in a few days with some extra water changes, but I'm having to move the tank in about 3 weeks on a 2 hour journey, and just want to make sure everything will go as planned. Last thing I want is for the stress of being moved to cause an out break of something, if this isn't a wound.

Thanks to anyone with ideas!

Are you sure she hasn't always had it, a bit like a birth mark, and you have only just noticed it? Don't know what to suggest other than keep water clean and keep an eye on it. The gravel looks a bit rough to me, are all the other cory's barbels ok?

I know you must get this a lot but how are your fish with eachother? The only reason I ask is because it seems to be a bit of a risk keeping angels, a gourami, other cichlids and a killi all in 230 litres.

Out of curiosity, what area of Cheshire are you from?

Hi Flute.
Is it possible to isolate the cory?

Maybe just add some myxazin by waterlife to be on the safe side.

The barbels. Does the substrate having any sharp edges that could account for the missing barbels.

None of the other corys have missing barbles :) As I explained in my first post, they got taken off when she swam into my gravel vac :( Although they seem ok on it and the gravel isn't sharp, I will be capping it with play sand in the near future so that they can bury their little heads in it to their hearts content :)

Wilder, I'll see if I can convince the OH to let me set up my hospital tank, and try and catch her ;)

Tuxyu3: I'm 100% it's a new mark, I can't see her at the moment but I'm hoping it will clear up with daily water changes. You're the first person to ask actually :p And oddly enough the stocking works really well! It wasn't a result of "Oh, I'll have these, and I like these" spur of the moment decisions. It took a long while for me to settle on it, and asked advice from quite a few other keepers on different forums.

Apart from the odd scuffle between the angels (which result in nothing more than nipped dorsal fins), everyone has their place. The keyholes and the krobia stay at opposite ends of the tank and tolerate each other well. The gourami was a nightmare before I added the angels- she would constantly start fights with my male keyhole, to the point where she'd try lip locking with him and was actually doing damage. So the angels keep her in check, and the panchax bothers no one, as they're all too large for him to see as prey. And my big male Krobia cruises around the tank keeping everyone in check, even though he's an absolute wuss and never starts fights. I think it's his size, as nothing else as big as him in the tank- they stop squabbling when they see him coming.

The tank also has a lot of bogwood and pots in it, so there's lots of hidy holes and enough wood and plants to break the line of sight, which I think is another contributing factor to why they behave themselves.

I know this balance wont last though, especially once the angels mature, hence my plans to split the stock. I have the second tank, it just needs the front panel replacing, and then the keyholes, gourami and albino, bronze and adolfi corys will be moved,(well there are a few ways round I could juggle the stock, I haven't decided yet). I'm in Northwich btw :)

Thanks for the replies guys :)

That's funny, i'm in Winsford, i take it you have been to somethin' fishy?

I know the feeling you have with the Krobia, it's the exact same thing that happens with my Gourami's.
Im glad to hear your stocking works well at the moment, i must admit i was curious as you are obviously fairly experienced and i wondered if this was the case and you are very good at managing stock, or the exact opposite

Small world! :D I have been to that shop yes, wasn't too impressed although they do sell nice redmoor root pieces at a great price :3 Are there any other good aquatics in the area? I don't have a car, so I've missed out on visiting shops that are out of town centres.

It's always handy to have a peace keeper in the tank that no one else is stupid enough to mess with :p And if Mor'du (the krobia :p) doesn't sort them out, then all it takes is me dipping the net in the tank and they very quickly get the message that they're not to fight :p I don't have to do that very often though, only really when introducing new fish.

Haha, I hope it's because I'm good at managing stock! XD I learnt a lot from Star4 about getting a good balance in tanks, everything in there seems to behave themselves so much better now that the tank is heavily stocked.

Weird mark is still there on the cory today, although she's as active as usual and eating well, so it's obviously not bothering her?

I find somethin' fishy is handy if you want a common fish, they often have good deals on but in my experience they are prone to have ich in their stock. I know of no other nearby shops apart from pets at home and maidenhead aquatics in knutsford. If you ever do get the opportunity to make a trip i would advise A-Z Aquatics and Rare aquatics in Crewe, there is also another there i have not visited. The redmoor wood is great, i have a piece in my 180 litre and plan to get more, stay well away from any plants you are not sure of, the same again for the PAH.

Flute it is up to you but I think I would use a bacterial med.
I've always been more cautious with corys.

Tuxyu3: I bought a group of Rummynose tetra from them, only to have the entire group die on me within days, despite my tank being stable and having all the correct parameters. So have not wanted to risk any of their stock since. Most of the plants they sell bar the java fern and vallis are non aquatic plants, so I stay away from those too :p

There's a Maindenhead aquatics in Knutsford?! I knew about the tiny P@H there, but had no idea about a Maindenhead! Will have to try and make my way there :D
I've not had the chance to visit Rare Aquatics, although I've wanted to for ages. As we're moving to North Wales in the next few weeks I don't think I'll get the chance :( Tropico Aquatics in Shotton is fantastic btw, although more of an online shop you can visit his fish house and choose in person. And there's an aquatics section in the garden centre in Winnington which is ok sometimes.

Wilder: Just waiting for the OH to come home from work so I can convince him to let me separate her to the hospital tank to treat what ever it is :) (Usually I would have had the hospital tank up and running already, but as we're moving very soon it makes having a third tank set up a bit more awkward). I only have an out of date bottle of King British Bacterial Control, so will have to pop into town tomorrow and see what Pets at Home stock. Any recommendations for the best bacterial med to use with corys?

Dont get to excited about Maidenhead, its a small shop in a garden centre, i went on Sunday and a lot of their tanks are still not up and running, not a very wide selection of dry good either IMO. Of the fish currently in my tank i have bought 4 zebra danio's one of which appears to have gill flukes and some harlequins that came with ich, i find these things impossible to spot in the shop and he often has some one-off fish i never see anywhere else.

Good luck with the move.

If you have an isolation tank furanol 2 by JBL is a good medication to have.
It will wipe good bacteria out in your filter.
Internal bacteria med by interpet. Only effective on mild bacteria infections.
Esha 2000. Only effective on mild bacteria infections.
Hope this helps.

Just had a look on google maps, and I don't think I'd be able to get to it without a car anyway tbh. Oh well! :)

Okie dokie, thanks Wilder :good: If I treat her it'll be in an isolation tank- don't want to dose my main tank really when the rest of the fish don't need it. I'll have a look what I can get my hands on in the shop tomorrow, hopefully they'll have one of the ones you suggest. I'd rather get something tomorrow than order online and wait days and days for it to arrive so I can start treatment ASAP. Really don't want to risk anything infecting the rest of the fish so soon before the move

I don't think you will be able to buy furanol 2 by JBL at the LFS.
Not many stores seem to have it in stock. I think it mainly due to the medication destroying your good bacteria in your filter. Isolation tanks is really needed when using this medication.
I don't think you will have problem getting hold on the other 2 medications I suggested.

Good Luck Flute.

Yeah, I don't think I will either. Never seen it in shops. Thanks as always for your help Wilder, I'll keep you updated :good:

I managed to get my hands on Intrepet Anti Internal Bacteria :) My god did the little bronze prove difficult to catch! I got her in the end though, and she's now in the 35 litre hospital tank.

I have one concern though- I'm not 100% sure that the sponge in the filter I'm using in there is seeded (it's been sitting in my internal hood filter for a couple of weeks, but not fully submerged in water), and it says to only preform a water change after 7 days. I'll be checking daily to make sure there's no ammonia or nitrite, but if there is should I re-dose the tank after I change any water?
