Time for round two, i thought it had been a while since the last spawn, came down this morning to find many many eggs :X

New net this time, and krib fry move to other tank :>

:good: - good luck with these.

Congrats on their spawn, looks has though they been a tad busy

yeah you could say i was a little shocked when i turned the light on this morning :) never had so many, my arm ached after from peeling them off the glass

I picked up 8 youngish Venezuelan Corys yesterday, i wonder if those being introduced excited the others to go bananas.

Im pretty sure these are bronze eggs but i'd really love it if the sterbais started to breed, and the bandits. Beggers cant be choosers i guess.

argh, came downstairs to fidn at least another 100 eggs! This net is going to be rather full

 All or nothing

Don't forget to put an airstone under the net,so the eggs get plenty of circulation around them, especially with that many :good:

my extra power head just about hits the bottom of the net so i think it should be ok, might get an airstone tomorrow, dont actually have a spare one at the moment lol :D

These guys started to hatch out last night and a very similar thing to last time seemed to be happening. I dont know if its possible for fry to "melt" into nothing , but some just seem to vanish in the net (which is new).

So, i sucked up over half the eggs with a pipette and put them into a 12 litre square tank (12x8x8), with no lid and no heater. Temp is around 21/22 degrees which i believe should be ok for the fry. The tank has a small electrical filter on it with a spray bar above the water. The filter pad isnt cycled but i've put 3/4 ceramic pieces from my external filter inside the sponge and tonight i'm going to take out a sponge from another mature filter and chop it up to place inside and on top of the new one just before the water gets into the impeller compartment.

Last night i added a tiny tiny amount of hikari first bites / decapsulated brine shrimp eggs to the tank for the fry to feed on.

This morning the liquid ammonia test wasnt as clear cut yellow (0) as it was last night. I swear the ammonia levels go up faster than you would expect and im hoping a bit of mature sponge tonight after a water change will help keep it at bay. I really should prepare a filter properly for these occasions. grrr

So, so far i've got a dozen wrigglers and close to 300 eggs waiting to hatch out in this tank and i've still got 300 odd eggs in the net, but seriously dont know whats going on there :)

The first spawn i had hatch out in the net were perfectly ok, but the last two in recent month just come to nothing.

I've taken out a good 100 infertile eggs over the past 3 days too, in the morning and when i get home from work. Perhaps the fertile eggs, just break down and become nothing...while some result in fry i dont know if thats possible.

Either way, i'm going to be cycling this fry tank filter one way or another so i can take the eggs out of the main tank when they spawn again and put them straight into another, the net inside the tank idea isnt doing it for me any more :< ggrrrr

When my albino laid masses of eggs a few weeks ago,i left them in the main tank in the net, which had plenty of filter flow, but mine did the same, eggs just disappeared into thin air,all i can think is the fish munched any fry/eggs through the net??

Anyhows a few pointers for you,fry wont feed on food in the first 24-48 hrs, they live off the egg sac :good: ,any food you put in will pollute the water. It very easy unless kept under control for ammonia/nitrite to rise very quickly,i tend not to use firstbites anymore, has i found this would turn my water quite quickly.

An air driven sponge or box filter would be better than an electric filter, these can easily suck the wee fry up unless you have it set to low and put something over the inlet of the filter...

I tip i picked up from inchworm,is too squeeze filter mulm into the fry tank in the first week, the fry will feed off the microbs in this :good: If i've got the fry in the net,i add bits of mature media sponge or java moss for them to find titbits on has opposed to feeding them too much in the first few days.

Good luck with the rest of the eggs & fry :good:

The filter is one that Maidenhead Aquatics stock, i've not seen them anywhere else before. They are actually quite good in design, the sponges are very dense like the typical sponge filters and they buff right up to the plastic so nothing can get in though the slats, i'll try get a picture later. Air sponge filters not an option for me, the tank is downstairs and sat on the shelf under my main tank, they make too much noise with the bubbling. My main filter hasnt been cleaned in about 3 weeks so i could probably find some mulm in there by now, i'll have a peek later.

I've got some more filter pads now so i can take out one from my upstairs tank, will chop it up and put into this little filter tonight and leave the rest for the fry to nibble on, good tip there!

Got home to find quite a few eggs in the tank had got fungus on them, obviously not enough flow and the eggs in the net had all hatched. Found it really hard to spot anything in there so i took the net out turned it inside out and emptied it into the little tank, quite a few wigglers found they way to a corner and i managed to count up about 30 odd. Still a few eggs to hatch so might end up with 40/50 in the end, very hard to see.

I got a sponge from the filter upstairs and squeezed it out into the tank, chopped it up and put into the new filter. It was effectively processing 30 litres of water before and this little tank is only 10, so im hoping for an instant cycle. Will test water in the morning. Also did a 50% temp matched water change. At least this time i might come out with a few!

PS, i tried the airstone under the net, it nearly blew it out the water :D so i found one of the new small filters blasting it from the site to be a better option.

I empty mine into a plastic tub, remove any fry into the tank, then discard the empty shells :good:

Congrats on the hatchlings, shame about the ones that went fungus, all trial & error...

Just remember to feed very minimal but often, keep the bottom clean and do small daily water changes(unless readings show otherwise)this will promote their growth :good:

I found 6 eggs this morning, unsure at this stage who's they are, either tri's or albinos

Tips for putting airstone under a net, either buy a adjustable valve for the airpump so you can turn it down so it dont lift the net,or put a plastic peg underneath the net to hold it down or i put a glass pebble in the bottom of the net this will stop it from rising :)

Good luck with your fry :good:

yeah trial and error it is, in a way im kinda glad i dont have to worry about and feed loads of them :) If this filter works nicely i'll be keeping a permanent ammonia source in there for the next spawn :)

lol, just done a water change on the main tank, then went upstairs to do my other tank, came back down to find about 50 eggs on the glass pretty high up :) I moved them all to the glass on my small fry tank :) Spotted a couple of the bronze corys clutching hold of more eggs so going to keep an eye on them for the morning. Stupid things :)
