Cory Missing Barbels?

I bought 5 cory Juliis (theyre not juliis but i cant remember the word for the common one, begins with T)

anyway 1 i got didnt have barels, and was reddish around the gill area, and the LFS isnt renowned for its exchanges or politeness so i thought id keep it, the thing is the other 4 are really active, and hes not, and im wondering if hes going to die?

Can corys still successfully feed without barbels?

Redness around the gills can suggest ammonia/nitrite in the water aggitating them, check your water stats, if its not yours thats caused the problem that could sort itself out. The missing barbels may well be due to them/it being kept on innapropriate substrate, anything to course or sharp can end up becoming like sand paper and rubbing off the barbel.
