hi this is my 1st tank and my 1st post i have 4 cory catfish 2 different types 2 of each (sorry not sure of species names) within each pair the markings are identical they were not sold as pairs ie male and female could anybody tell me how i can distinguish the sex of them. also i have noticed today that my female platty is gravid, as i am always mesmerised by my tank this is a recent thing could anybody advise as to gestation periods as i would like to seperate and raise the fry( also any tips on acheiving this please) any help/comments gratefully recieved thanks

Mark, if you can get a good view of the fish from above, a male cory is more or less gradually tapered from head to tail while a female will have a definite bulge between the head and tail. Since each variety has a slightly different shape, its better if you can compare two of the same kind to see if there is a noticeable difference. At rest on the bottom of the tank, they do rest occasionally, a male's nose will be closer to the gravel than a female's. Again its the bulge in the belly that makes the difference obvious.
