I have just acquired a corner tank that is 30 inches across by 20 inches high by 30 inches on the other sides too. Not sure how many gallons that is?

I have two community tanks and would really like a cichlid tank. Will this tank be large enough? I don't want dwarf cichlids but something slightly bigger, ideally.

The ones that caught my eye are:

Yellow labs
Electric blue Johannii
Rusty Cichlid
Saulosi
pseudotropheus Sp. (Elongatus Mpanga)
Zebra long pelvic
Brichardi
Jewel Cichlid
Pundamilia Nyererei (Python Is.)

Open to any other suggestions.

Possibly with flagtail catfish? Or pictus pim.

Which of these could possibly be kept in a corner tank, which go best together, how many of each would I need to keep the aggression as low as possible?

I'm still working on the tank at the moment as I bought it second hand and the cabinet needs restoring a bit, so it's empty at the moment.

The alternative is to take the fish from my Juwel Rio 180 litre and put them in the corner tank and use the 180 litre as a cichlid tank if it is more suitable. Would rather not do this though, the Rio is the centerpiece of the lounge and is great as a planted community tank.

Thanks very much for any advice.

:good: Yellow labs
 Electric blue Johannii
:good: Rusty Cichlid
 Saulosi---aggressive
:good: pseudotropheus Sp. (Elongatus Mpanga)
 Zebra long pelvic--to aggressive
:good: Brichardi(species only)
 Jewel Cichlid---don't know anything about jewels
 Pundamilia Nyererei (Python Is.)---to aggressive

I think a Dianema urostriatum would be fine with them. I don't know if it's a grouping catfish or one that likes to live singly. Do some reading on that one.

Sure I think it could work. It's about 40 usg so I'd say roughly 12 fish total. You may be able to get away with Johannii in there.

If it were me, I'd do 4 Mpanga, 4 yellow labs, and 4 rusties+ a catfish or 2. You'll need at least 5x turnover in filtration(200 gph) at the minimum.

Cheers,
Kj

*one more thing.

Make sure to stay away from males that look the same....ex Mpanga and Johannii-both are black and blue. That will severly escalate aggression in your size tank.

Thanks kj23502 for the advice. I'm still reading up on cichlids, had a look in my local LFS yesterday too. I really love the yellow labs and the mpanga, so would be quite happy with your suggested stocking. Will take a look at the catfish later after work.

Is there any specific kind of rock they prefer or are they ok with sand as substrate with a mixture of slate, lava rock and other stuff from LFS in there?

I also saw some viejita at my LFS yesterday, whilst small they were amazing! Guessing they won't go with the Lake Malawi set up though .....?

any rock will work as long as it is stacked to have nooks and cranies in it for hiding and territories. Sand is the best substrate.

nope those won't go w/malawi.

Cheers,
Kj

Great, thanks. Will have a ponder. Really not sure cichlid is going to be the way to go for this tank. May have to think of something else. Just wanted something different to a community tank.
