Hi,

Would it be safe to put 3 small peices of broken Coral we found on a tropical beach years go into a Tropical fishtank ? They measure approx 2 x 6 cm each ? Also,we have some beautiful stones the kids collected from a UK beach years ago,can either go in, or should avoid anything connected to saltwater ?

John.

The coral will raise the pH of the water, so unless you're keeping African Cichlids or Livebearers that do well in the 8-8.2 range then don't add it.

Broken coral or crushed shells are often added to tropical fish tanks. The issue is that they can increase the hardness of the water and raise the pH. These aren't "problems" as such, but they will change your water parameters. Now the thing about it is that the higher your pH, the slower it will dissolve and the slower it will affect your water parameters. I would warn you though that if you place them in the tank, they will not stay in the same condition that you have right now. They will dissolve. If these are important to you, then don't add them.

The stones should be fine, and have zero effect on your water, but to test that, pour a little vinegar over them. If they fizz at all, then you don't want to use them. If not, then there should be no trouble.

Point taken.

Thanks again.
