hey, ive just started a marine tank in a 125ltr tank with live rock all prematured from a freind i bought it off with a pink spotted goby the filter is matured as there is not traces of any bad water so far. now i like a challenge so i decided to buy a copperband butterfly, i ddint QT him as i dont have one nor afford one but he seems to of got a tiny hitch of ich me thinks :S hes eating ok happlily grazing on the rock and eating copepods and a little brine shrimp when watching him.

the question i want to ask is can you use mealfix to cure ich? as it a reef safe remidy thats natural.
And he seems to have a little bit of odd scales in one part as in like flaking but isnt? can any1 help me?
cheers

Isn't 125 liters only 33 US gallons?.....

Did you research this purchase? Copperband butterflies should be in tanks double the size of what you have - liveaquaria lists the minimum tank size as 50 gallons... Liveaquaria profile

If I just got the conversion wrong, please forgive me - otherwise this fish should go back to the store asap...

But no, melafix is not a cure for ich.

really! oh ffs lol hes just settled in!

sorry add a bit more. but thing is where i go to buy fish my dealer has had 31 yrs in the marine trade and ive seen him running a 45 ltr ball tank with naf standard light and filter and having 2 clowns, cleaner shrimps live rock and coral and they are fine tbh if he gets to big i cn take him out -_-

Your tank size is probably one of the things that is stressing the fish out and causing the ich. Ich is mainly caused by stress. If the store owner is the one that recommended this fish for your size tank, never listen to advice from him again. ANYONE can do things wrong for a long time and say "I have 31 years experience". Research, research, research. Take the fish back if you still can, otherwise this fish will probably meet an early end in your tank. Let us know if you have questions on the proper fish that may do well in your size tank, I hope things go well for you.

31 years of keeping fish bewteen arrival in the UK and collection by custumers while happy to hook out the odd dead one is a bit different to keeping a healthy reef at home.

i have no issues with a crap dealer as long as you ignore them!

mine recently got me a rose BTA direct from TMC, when i went to collect he metioned he also had another i may like that he got while he was there......"pure white with a large open mouth waiting to feed - looks stunning".hmmmmmmm, i lthink i'll just take the rose thanks!

You like a challenge but copperbands are extremly poor in fully established reef tanks of many hundreds of gallons. They are simply too delicate and just keel over and die for no apparant reason. Your size of tank you have will only assist it in becoming stressed and as mentioned, a vry high probability that the ich is being caused by the tank size.
When decideing on a fish , take into consideration its day to day life on a reef and consider how well it will adapt to your own system.
You mentio its settled in yet the fact it has ich means its stressed so i would argue that its not settled in at all to be honest :*)

Copperbands are like a discus for saltwater. Weak, weak, weak. If you can get one to accept food, bravo.
A butterfly with ick is basically a time bomb waiting to infect the other occupants
If you think it will live anyway, try perhaps a cleaner prawn.

Good luck, youll need it for a copperband

hey, had to make a new account from some strange reason as i cldnt make a thread in the other forum topics but ohwell!

ok well i asked my closer much better fish stockist the one with the years of expericence not the place i got the fish from and he has kindly taken him on to care for him then if he survives sell him on but i was told he has flukes :S.

but now i seen my mistakes and and taking time with my picking of fish. so that day i decided to buy

2 green chromosis

1 cleaner shrimp

1 sand sifting star fish

so far so good and much better then the copperband :D but they will join my 2 neon blue hermits and lazy pink spotted goby

later on im getting 2 perculas, 1 coral beauty, and prehaps a royal gramma or algae blennie do thinks thats just right then ? with prehaps more coral as i only have one at mo so it settles in befor the clowns????? cheers! :alien:

Good choice of fish.
My only comment is the algae blenny. Make sure if has plenty to feed on as they usually never take frozen foods, flake foods or even nori algae that canbe purchased at the shops. They usually only eat algae growing in the tank so unless this is in abundance they sadly usually starve to death. :*)

ok cheers, can you put 2 dwarf angels together such as coral beaut. and um that one thats had black and white with red stripes down it?

btw why is it when i go to clean my filter/ tank i found loads of like algae tissue substance in the pipes????

Usually no u cant put 2 dwarf angels together happily. U didnt mention the size of tank, if it is around 100 gallons, preferably more {someone correct me if im wrong} they can coexist. It is good that u want 2 different species, and make sure to introduce them simultaneously, but there still may be a chance of fighting.
