Convicts Cichlids

no one will buy my cichlid babies...the LFS will tkae them, but wont give me anythign for them...i want to set up a community tank with soe nice fish...suggestions, if not anyonein these forums want them?

Congrats on the fry.

Unfortunately, Cons breed so easily that unless you want to give them away, you will probably be stuck with them. Wait a few more weeks and you'll have a lot more.

if you like having convicts in your tank, the best thing i found to do with the fry is to let the sa/ca's feed on them. you breed your own food and it gives them the challenge of hunting for their food. bring back a little of the wild to your tanks.

i have two breeding pairs in with my red devils. convicts can also breed about every 6 weeks and lay about 150-200 eggs.

I use my breeding convicts to provide live food for my Oscar and Africans. They love it and it does make watching them feed or the more "wild like."

Hope that doesn't sound too cruel... )

whats sa/ca?
some one buy my cichlids i need money to start my tetra tnak, if not, how can i get different types of fish, and what about getting rid of my males, and just haveing females. and what other type of fish could i put in withh them?

in other words, what would be a good convict tank, with other types of fish in it...post them please

You can't make much money at all selling cons. If you want to get rid of them and don't want to use them as feeders the only thing I can suggest is to take them to the lfs and see if you can have credit for them and buy the tetras that way.

If you have a breeding pair in a 29g tank I don't think you can get away with adding anything else as they will harass them. Even other cichlids. With all females you'd have a better chance to add other fish, but you couldn't put any tetras or community fish in there.

If you mean your 32g tank, I wouldn't add anything else to it. Female cons get about 5". That's already a pretty stocked tank, imo.

I have one male convict who shares his tank with one female when they're ready to "go again!" ) It's a 30 g tank. I take the female out and put her in another 30g tank that she shares with 2 hero's, a parrot fish, a pleco and a couple of cory's.

I extract the babies and grow them for a couple weeks before feeding them to the Oscars.
