imo, cons shouldn't be kept in anything smaller than 29 gallons but a 3' tank would be better. male cons can reach 6-7" and need their room to move. 10 gallons would suit a convict to about 2-2.5" and then the con needs a larger home. a 20 gallon would work to about 4".

as VIP said, cons and mollies could be kept together in larger tanks. I'd recommend at least 55 gallons to attempt this. mollies aren't the fastest fish in the world so they'll need plenty of room to stay out of sight of the convicts. tiger barbs are a better dither, imo, with convicts because they are a much faster fish.

Cons should not be kept in a 10 gallon, no 6" fish should be kept in a 10 gallon especially not ones with the territorial needs of cons. Just because you want to keep your fish cramped and uncomfortable doesn't mean its bad advice to keep em well.

and they will and do grow preety fast IME. and while they grow their teritorial issues get bigger.

I think there are 2 reasons for this.

1. generations of inbreeding and

2. not being given an adequate tank size to reach their full potential.

I had a convict pair spawn last Feb and I still have several of the offspring. The largest male is already 3.5". I have no reason to think this con would not reach at least 5-6". He was the fastest growing and is the largest from that batch of fry.

my lfs says other wise . they have a massive con,but double the priceof the 3 inch ones.oh well.

I think cons will do good in a 20g. My friend had them in a 15g long, same as a 2 but like 3 inches shorter.
