Well this is the first time i have ever had a concern about disease and a Convict of mine, one of my males (approx 3 inches) had a pinky lump (about 3mm) on its body, near a bottom fin a few weeks ago, these seems to disappear within a few weeks of its own accord. Now i notice the same fish has a REALLY BRIGHT RED lump on one fin, also on body area / bottom of finn. This lump is slighly smaller but much more red.

No other fish are affected and the fish isnt displaying any problematic behaviour at all.

Water is the normal, pH about 7.5, temp 78F, ammonia and nitrite 0, nitrate about 30-40ppm

Am guessing its bacterial? possibly an ulcer?

as for treatment, at the moment, all i have in stock is Interpet Anti-Internal Bacteria, Interpet White Spot and Waterlife Sterazin

I would of liked to use Water Myaxin or Interpet Fungus / Finrot, but dont have them.

Thinking about some low level salt for tank as i know most cichlids are fine in small amounts

Not too keen on treating fish in isolation, although i guess this maybe an option as no other fish are affected.

I have had this male convict for over a year now.

PS - never seen sich a bright red mark on a fish ever, and is quite small, about 1-2 mm

i usually do 30% w/c once a week

tank hasnt had a water change in about 10 days, so think i will do 40% tomorrow and then either,

1. medicate the tank with an antibacterial

2. isolate the convict and treat (altho really dont want to do this)

what about Melafix???

What are the tankmates, and what size tank? It could be a battle wound, or a bacterial issue. Either way, isolation in a smaller tank where you can change water more easily & med more cheaply is the best.

thanks

other tank mate's are convicts and jade eye cichlid. This guy is one of the bigger convicts and is generally the toughest one, so i dont think its a battle wound. Despite it being convicts, there is not much aggro, so i guess its likely to be bacterial.

Can anybody recommend a medication (if i decide to go in that direction), I live in the UK and was thinking about Waterlife's Myaxin

Any circling white dead skin around the lump.
Just want to make sure it dosn't look like a cauliflower with being on the fin.

I would issolate and try a bacterial med as red lumps can be bacterial.
