I have noticed something with my convict fry. I have two pink (well more white than pink) convicts that breed usually every other week. When they become old enough to sex I noticed that all of the large ones are female. Is this normal? Every single large convict fry is a female, I just think thats odd.

i've heard of male cichlids eating all of the male fry, suppose they might be some truth in it?
thats why all the males are smaller, as soon as they become large enough to sex they aren,t?

who knows? mayb true?

Hmmm, eating all the male fry? I would assume then that there are certain hormones that they can detect in the water when they are still too small to tell sex on visually. I usually move the fry to a separate tank at about a month old because thats when the convicts start to breed again. Where did you read that the males eat the male fry?

i went to the british cichlid association monthly meeting/auction ( one off!!! (tongue twister i know :p )
and i heard some one talking about bricardis doing it...

if any body has also heard of this or even better experienced it please post...

ARobinson

could possibly be just because the males tend to grow quicker, hence been seen as a threat sooner?

p.s. guppymonkey nice to have some body reply on this forum to my posts, thanks :D :D :D
