Ok i know about convicts and all, but my friend gave me a pair *male/female* and i put them in a 30gallon BY THEM SELFS. Ok well there are a lot of plants fack and real. A pot in there. Lots of gravel to dig in. Ok well any way a good tank for them. Ok the first two days after i got them in there they were together and swimming just fine. They were even showing there colors as in there strips and she had a little bit of a orange belly. they even started digging by a plant in there. BUT after them 2 days he started chasing her and chasing her.. I read thats normal. BUT still he is chasing the heck out of her and every time he catchers her he bites her fins and body. Her tail is a little bit up and the back of her body is a little nip on now. She has no strips or orange belly no more but he is showing his strips.

IS that normal for him to do it this bad???? Should i take her out and put a different female in? She is getting a slight fatter belly tho maybe due to eggs in her

Hmmm.. Ive never kept convicts but my kribs did this before too.
I got them put them in the tank and after a few days they he was chasing her.It might go on for a while . in my tank it probibly lasted a week.
And then they spawned.
So its probibly just nothing. youll have to wait and see for a few days. but if shes getting seriously hurt put her in a different tank and u might have to try another female.

My friend going to trade me females she has a lager one than what i have but still my male is big. So we are going to try that. the one i have is getting a little beat up for sure and she has no orange belly or strips so i do not think she wants to breed but he does.

my friend has a female with a nice orange belly and strips.

well we did a switch today, seems like he likes the new girl a little better. she is bigger than my other female so this should work i hope. He is doing some chasing right now but not as bad.

Convicts don't really pair, they just do the deed they carry on, i have had a female breed with a male convict, then a sajica, then tart at a firemouth....in the space of 2 months.

dang really?? every where i read it say's they pair up for life. Even my friend said that to me. Unless you take the female away they stay together. mmm strange that you tell me they dont pair :(.

any way i did get a bigger female now so im hoping they do better.

Naw, they are promiscuous lol

I have read storys of males having 2 broods with 2 females at the same time before :p

My female Con was a right lil slut :p i got rid of her in the end because she was causing riots lol.

Infact, from my experiences, CA's don't tend to pair anyway, unless you keep them with nothign else, and they are forced to, i have kept Texas, JD's, Jags, Cons, Firemouths, Sajica, Blood Parrots etc...if there is multiple species in teh same tank they will just breed with what they feel like.

For example a person i knew had a group of 5 Jags and 2 bay snooks, hopign to get a jag pair and ended up getting a Bay Snook x Jag pair :p

wow LOL thats some cool info there lol. Ok well he is still chasing the new girl around, should i let them do that or take him out and try another day? My friend that gave me the pair in the first place said he has bred before just fine. They are alone in a 30gallon.

If you just leave them to it, you'll have eggs soon, just don't intervene.

Maybe try breeding somthign with value tho after, because Cons are hard to get rid of, maybe Honduran Red Points, Yellow Convicts, Marble Cons etc.

All commonly found CA's are nice and easy to breed.

SA's are much tougher because you need to get them to bond first.

oh wow ok cool, ya i was thinking of some time just getting rid of the con's and go with a different type lol. k, i'll let them do there thing if he does beat her up i'll just stop trying to breed them lol. she almost as big as him but alot larger than the other female i had. Thanks for all your info :) you really helped me out.

also the ones your talking about other than the cons i got now where would i find them at? i dont think the pet shop here gets them in.

he's talking about CA fish not the SA. If i can't do the con's right im thinking of saleing them off and getting some of the ones he listed but i dont think the pet shop here gets them type in and if they even do they are small not full grown sized to where i could tell male from female.

I see.

Not too many speices can fit in your tank.
You could try dwarf cichlids?
(kribs,rams,port acara,cockatoo cichlid,etc.)
African cichlids are a bit better to go with because they get get huge.
They stay small around 4-5"
Where as the SA and CA get 4-12"
Would you try african cichlids or are you sticking to CA and SA's?

I dont mind trying African ones are they easy to sex? I just one one pair in the tank. If this pair of con's dont work out i'll get rid of them and try a piar of something else.

Well .

If your new for africans ill tell you alittle about them.

>They all come from africa.(lol)
>Other african you see if tanks labled as "Assorted Africans" are most likley hybrids.
>If your a beginner on Africans try kribensis(Pelvichromis Pulcher)
Easy to breed. males get 3-4" and female are usually 3".
Have lots of caves for them.
.
>Other african cichlids you see are mouth brooders. They carry the eggs in there mouth for a month or 24 days.and release the fry.
But after that they have really nothin to do with the fry and might eat them.
