Ive got 12 juvenille cons in a 40 gallon (not yet, planning on it), along with two smaller RES. Could I get some more cichlids for tankmates? Like an oscar or something?
Sean

An oscar by itself won't fit in a 40 gallon, not to mention with 12 incredibly territorial convicts and 2 turtles. In the 40 gallon you could have maybe 3-4 convicts, and the turtles, but not much more than that. A full grown pair really needs 30 gallons to itself so I wouldn't get more than 2, and maybe another smallish cichlid.

a pair can live in a 10, while a 20 is ideal. i dont know about turtles honestly best not to mix different animals in such a little space. you trying to make...uhhhh what are they? terraniums? im not sure the whole half land half water bit. i dont think you should

Hi, I wasnt going to make it as a terrarium, RES are mainly aquatic, as long as they have a log or something to dry off and sun a bit on, theyll be fine.

A pair of convicts cannot live in a 10 gallon. Anyone here will back me up on this. Even 20 is kind of a tight squeeze for a full-grown pair and their fry.

they can trust me. a 20 is not a tight squeeze at all. move the fry you cant keep them all

Who here thinks a pair of cons can live in a 10 gallon?

EDIT: Wait... are you going by UK gallons or US gallons? Either way it's too small, IMO, but...

You can keep em in a 10g I think, I have a pair in a 15g, and they seem happy (and breed a lot), so I guess a 10 would be okay...

Well cons will generally breed no matter what size they tank, they are like large stripey guppies. Breeding isn't really an indication of health. For example a long time ago I kept 2 angels with a bunch of other fish in a 10 gallon, and they bred. But I now know that 10 gallons is way too small for these fish.

the dimensions are fine. its us gallons. depending on how well you maintain ur tank is if you can keep cons in a 10. i let them breed and syphon the fry out or take the parents out which ever seems to overwhelm me more
